My invention relates to improvements in covers for booklets or catalogs, and the object of the invention is to provide a label for identification purposes upon the back of the booklet whereby it can be readily picked from a number of others.

Most manufacturers of today realize the necessity of keeping their customers acquainted with their new lines of manufacture and to attain this end periodically send out catalogs or booklets. As these catalogs or booklets are sent out at comparatively short intervalsthey are not as a rule voluminous but generally are of the type comprising some ten to thirty leaves which are secured together by wire staples. The customer generally puts all these types of booklets upon a reference shelf and when he desires a certain type of goods or equipment refers to the particular catalogs sent him by the manufacturers thereof. It is generally found however as these booklets are comparatively thin that considerable time is lost in searching along the shelf or shelves until the required catalogs are ob- 2 tained, and furthermore as this type of booklet is only provided with a paper cover, such covers are very apt to become torn during the repeated process of pulling out practically all the booklets which are very often tightly packed together in endeavoring to find a particular one.

The object of my invention is therefore to provide a label upon the catalog or booklet whereby it can be immediately picked out from amongst others, and a further object of my invention is to provide such label with a tab in order that the booklet may be pulled out from between others however tightly packed.

A. further object of my invention is to so 4 position my label that it will of itself spread out and become conspicuous when the catalog is inserted between the others upon a shelf, and a further object of my invention is to so cut and fold the tab that as the label spreads out the tab will also swing into a position whereby it may be readily gripped.

A further object of my invention is to identify the label with the contents of the catalog to which itis attached.

My invention consists of a label for catalog formed and positioned all as hereinafter more particularly described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of a catalog showing my labelattached thereto, such back being in the folded position.

Figure 2 is a front elevational view of a fragmentary portion of a book shelf showing the catalog inserted between other books and my label spread into the catalog identifying position.

Figure 3 is a plan view of the fragmentary portion of the book shelf illustrated in Figure 2, showing the catalog partially inserted.

Figure {l is a similar view to Figure 3 showing the catalog further inserted and the label opening into the catalog identifying position;

The booklet or catalog 1 to which my label is particularly adapted to be attached is of the type illustrated'in Figure; 6, which'comprises a plurality of sheets contained within a paper cover 2; all of which are stapled together by 80 means of a plurality of wire staples 3.

My label 4 is positioned around the back of'the booklet upon the cover 2 and is also retained in position by: the staples 3. This labelca n'be of course of any desired shape 35 and dimensions but in practice I have found it advantageous to make it of a width corresponding to the width of the back of an average 300 page book. Upon reference to the drawingsit will be seen that I show my label applied to a catalog of hoists and therefore have shaped it to simulate a hoist and have printed the word Hoists thereon so that the catalog can be readily identified.

In order that the catalog to which my label is attached can be readily removed from amongst other tightly packed books or booklets I have provided a tab 5 which is out from the label liintermediately of its length and width. This tab which is integral with the m0 label at its upper edge or bending line 6is bent back upon the label, and such artificial back and tab creased along the central line 7 through and along which the staples 3 extend. When the catalog is being manufactured the leaves, cover and my label are placed upon the sta ling machine and the staples passed throng the central creases, after which the booklet or catalog is folded over in the usual manner as illustrated in Figures 1 and 3, the tab 5 extending upwardly with its back fac-- ing out. 7 As I form my label from heavier stock than the cover of its booklet, such label will not lie absolutely flat upon the cover but will be slightly inclined outwardly as clearly shown in Figure 3. When the booklet is inserted between others upon a shelf and positioned in alignment therewith, the edges 8 of the label will come into contact with the other books and spread out as illustrated in Figures 4 and 5. The spreading out movement of the label has a tendency to swing the tab 5 downwardly into an outwardly extending position as shown in Figures 2 and 5, and by means of, which the booklet can be readily removed from place.

From the foregoing description it will be apparent that I have produced a valuable improvement in booklet or catalog covers, whereby such booklets may be readily picked out and withdrawn from others without waste oftime or any injury to the cover of the catalog, furthermore by designing my label to simulate the goods to which the catalog refers I have provided even a quicker means of identification than would be the case if only a plain label and title were used. Although I have shown and described a particular embodiment of my inventionand have utilized the staples of the booklet as an attaching means, it is to be understood that I can make such changes and alterations as I may deem necessary without departing from the spirit of my invention as set forth in the appended claims.

What I claim as my invention is:

1. A label for booklet covers secured only to the booklet back and of a width greater than the thickness of the booklet and freely extending from the back over portion of the outside of the booklet covers.

2. A label for stapled booklets secured only to the booklet back by means of the staples which extend through the booklet leaves and cover, said label being of a width greater than the thickness of the booklet and freely extending from the back over portion of the booklet covers.

3. A label for booklets secured only to the booklet back and of a greater width than the booklet thickness and freely extending from the back over portion of the booklet covers, and a tab cut from the label and adapted to extend downwardly when said label is bent substantially at right angles to the booklet covers.

4. A label for booklets secured only to the booklet back, and of a width greater than the booklet thickness covers and freely extending from the back over portion of the booklet covers, and a tab cut from the label through its line of attachment with the booklet back and bent back upon the face of the label whereby its rear side is facing outwardly, and a folding crease extending'through the label and turned back tab along its line of attachment with the booklet back.
