This invention relates to a lock of the character principally adapted for use on brief cases, valises, bags trunks, and the like, al-
' though no limitation as to the use of its principles broadly to be implied.
It is aimed to provide such a lock which may be used as an ordinary catch lock and which may also be used as a combination lock, yet without requiring the use of a key,
and accordingly being a dual purpose look.
It is further aimed to provide such a lock wherein practically any number of different settings in combination for locking may be realized through the interchangeability of the tumblers.
Various additional objects and advantages will be pointed out or become apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in connection with the accompanying drawings illustrating an operative embodiment.

In carrying out the invention a suitable casing is provided such as a face member or plate 10 having a depression 11, and a rear plate 12 detachably connected to the plate 10 as by bolts or the like which may also serve to secure the device to a brief case, bag or other article in connection with which it is to be used. The wall of depression 11 has an opening 13 therethrough for receiving the ca stud or part to be engaged and locked.
Within the depression 11 is operatively positioned a slide 18 which moves relatively to the opening 13 to engage and disengage the stud or part to be locked. An operating knob 19 has a tubular shank 20 extending therefrom passing through an elongated slot 21 in the wall of depression 11 and journaled in the slide 18 and upset against or otherwise rigidly connected to a tubular actuating disk or member 22. A stop and guide lug 23 extends rigidly inwardly from the main wall of the depression 11 through an elongated slot 24 in the slide 18 and such slide has an angle end wall 25 in abutment with the stop lug 23 in the locked position of the slide and the latter is urged to that position through the expansion of a blade spring 26 engaging" a wall of the depression and engaging said end 25. Within the depression 11 is a frame 27 consisting essentially of aplate having one end and two sides bent inwardly at right angles forming the walls 28, and at the other end being adapted to reston the end 25. Such frame 27 has an elongated slot- 29 through which the lug 23'passes, since the frame 27 slides or travels with the slide 18. It is to be noted that the frame 27 is removable and is held against displacement by a stud 30 extending therefrom and into the socket 30' formed by the hollow shank 20, and by the plate 12 which extends across and against the same.
Arranged in the frame 27 alternately are plates 31 and tumblers 32. These may be in any desired number but there are preferably four plates and three tumblers. It is to be noted that the tumblers are journaled on the stud 30 and each has an arcuate slot 33,' the slots of the different tumblers preferably differing in size to afford different combinations in which the lock may be set, or arranged for unlocking. The plates 31, it is to be noted, have lugs 34 at their corners to coact with the walls 28 to secure the plates in the frame against displacement. Also, such plates have notches or slots 35 in one edge in'regist-ry with the slot 29 and that the tumblers 32 have slots 36 which may be brought into registry with the slots and 29 and slot 2% so that the slide 18 may be operated to open the lock.
Extending laterally from the member 22 is a lug 37 which passes freely through the large central openings of the plates 31 and into the arcuate slots 33 of the tumblers to the end that the knob 19 may be operated to cause the disk or member 22 to appropriately actuate the tumblers to bring the slots 36 thereof into proper position to permit opening movement of the slide 18.
In operation, with the tumbler slots alined with the slots 35 and 29, the knob 19 may be operated so that shank 20 will slide in the slot 21 and the slide 18 will engage or disengage the stud or element passed through opening 13. Thus the lock may serve as an ordinary catch, since the spring 26 constantly urges the slide 18 to locking position. The device may be locked by appropriately moving the knob 19 so that the tumblers will be moved in order to disaline their slots 36 to the end that the peripheries of the tumblers will engage the stop or lug 23 if it is surreptitiously attempted to open the lock. The combination at which the lock may be opened of course is known to the owner and the lock may be readily opened by him. To aid in the determination of the position of the parts at the proper combinations, the knob and adjacent portion of the depression 11 may be indexed or calibrated as at 38.
Attention is called to the fact that as the parts of the lock for the most part are removable, particularly the frame 27, plates 31 and tumblers 32, the latter may be shifted to interchange so as to vary the combination.
Various changes may be resorted to provided they fall within the spirit and scope of the invention.
What is claimed is 1. A look of the class described having a casing, a stud, a latch slide within the casing havin a slot through which the stud passes, said slide having an end wall at an angle thereto, means urging said end wall into contact with the stud, an operating shank j ournaled in the slide, an actuating member on the shank having a slot registrable with said stud and having a lug, a removable frame engaging said slide and fitting said wall, said frame carrying said stud; said stud extending into said shank, tumbler members journaled on the stud and having elongated slots into which the lug extends, and said tumbler members having slots to register with the first mentioned slot for the purpose specified.
2. A lock of the class described having a casing, a stud, a latch slide within the casing disposed adjacent the front wall thereof having a slot through which the stud passes, said slide having an end wall at an angle thereto, means urging said end wall into contact with the stud, an operating shank journaled in the slide, an actuating member on the shank having a slot registrable with said stud and having a lug, a removable frame engaging said slide and engaging the rear wall of the casing, said frame carrying said stud, said stud extending into said shank, tumbler members ournaled on the last stud and having elongated slots into which the first stud extends, said tumbler members having slots to register with the first mentioned slot for the purpose specified, said frame having angle walls engaging the disks, plates associated with the tumblers having lugs coacting with said walls to prevent displacement of the plates, and said plates having slots in registry with said stud.
