TILL-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 448,962, dated March 24, 1891. Application filed June 11, l890i Serial No. 355,080- (Model-l alarm specially adapted for money-drawers,
which is very simple and-durable in construction, locking the drawers securely and at the same time permitting a quick opening of the same by the operator, who knows the combination, and also giving an alarm.
The invention consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation of part of the same on the line new of Fig. 4, looking in the direction of the arrow m. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the improvement with the top plates of the casing removed. Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional side elevation of the improvement on the line y y of Fig. 4. The till or money-drawer A is held to slide in suitable guideways on the under side of the fixed table B, and in the rear end of the said till A is held a casing 0, open at the bottom and closed at the top, being provided in the latter with a transverse slot D, in which operates the cross-piece E of the U-shaped locking bar E, pivoted at E to the sides of the casing O. The casing C is provided with a number of longitudinal partitions 0, between which are held, in sets of two, the tumblers F, F, F, and F held to slide longitudinally and resting on transverse pins G, secured to the sides of the casing C, and the tumblers F are notched in the lower edges to hold them in position. There are four of the tumblers F and two each of the tumblers F, F, and F which are of the same length but shorter than the tumblers F, and the corresponding ends of all the tumblers are marked a, b, 0, cl, and e. The tumblers F, F and F are provided centrally their lower edge with a narrow slot F and the tumblers F centrally their lower edge with a wide slot F The tumblers F are rounded at one upper corner F and provided with a slot F somewhat removed from the center toward the other end. The tumblers F are provided near one end with a slot F and also with a slot F in the same position relatively to the other end as the slot F of the tumblers F. The tumblers F are provided with a slot F near one end and a slot F in a similar position to the slots F but having its forward wall rounded, and the tumblers F are provided with a slot F in the upper edge, similar to the slot F of the tumblers F and have one end rounded at F The sets of tumblers are arranged near the top of the casing O, and the slots formed in their upper edges are adapted to correspond with the transverse slot D, formed in the top of the casing C, so that the cross piece E of the locking-bar E can pass into the said slot D and the slots in the tumblers in order to unlock the till A. The two tumblers of each set are operated on by a lever H H H H H", &c., the upper ends of said levers extending into the slots F F, formed in the under side of the two tumblers of each set. The levers H, H, H H and H are all pivoted on a transverse rod H secured to the sides of the casing C, and the lower ends of these levers pass through a slot A, formed in the bottom of the drawer or till A. To the outer ends of the levers H, H, H H and H are pivotally connected the rods 1, I, I I and I respectively, extending along the under side of the till A to the front'of the same and passing through the bearing A secured on the under side of the said till. The rods 1, 1', 1 ,1 and I are provided on their outer ends with downwardly-extending finger-pieces J, J, J J and J respectively, serving for conveniently moving the rods I and the respect- IOO ive levers II. Each of the latter is provided a short distance above its pivot H with the two offsets K and K, extending in opposite directions and engaged, respectively, by the free ends of the springs L and L, secured to the casing G. The springsL and L have the tendency to hold the said levers II in a vertical position, as is plainly shown in Fig. 1.
In the cross-piece E of the locking-barEis formed an opening E adapted to be engaged by asIightIy-curved arm N, pivoted at N to the under side of the table B. hen the till A is inits innermost position, the said curved arm N rests on top of the casing C and terminates in front of the cross-bar E of the locking-bar E. \Vhen the locking-bar Eis in its lowermost position-that is, in the slot D and the slots in the tops of the tumblers-and the till is drawn outward, the said pivoted arm slides over the top of the casing C without engaging the cross-piece E of the locking-bar E. lVhen the latter is in its outermost position, as shown in dotted lines in Figs. 5 and 6, then the pivoted arm N passes into the opening E of the cross-piece E of the locking-bar E, when the till A is moved outward, so that the latter can only be moved a short distance and cannot be opened. On the under side of the table B is also secured a projection 0, adapted to engage the upper end of a gravity-lever I, hung 011 the pin E, projecting from the locking-bar E. On the said pin E is also hung loosely a striker Q, adapted to be engaged by the said gravitylever P and operating on a bell R, secured to one side of the casing O.
The operation is as follows: When the till A is moved inward, the pivoted arm i7 rests on top of the casing C and remains at its inner end in front of the cross-piece E of the locking-bar E, as is plainly shown in Fig. 1. The sets of tumblers are set in such a manner that one, two, or more sets of the said tumblers have their respective upper notches out of line with the cross-slot D when the respective lever 11,11, 11 ,11 or II is in a vertical position, so that the locking-bar E rests with its cross-piece E on the top edges of the said respective sets of tumblers, and consequently projects above the top plate of the casing 0. Now when a person not knowing the combination pulls the till A outward the arm N passes into the opening E on the cross piece of the locking-bar E, so that the till can only move forward until the cross-piece E strikes against the lug N in the arm N. A further outward movement of the till is thus prevented. The lock is set by arranging the tumblers with the letters desired for each key forward combined in sets of two, or one tumbler may be used with each key that is, to set a key on a put an a and e together on that key; to set on I), put a b and 6 together; to set on 6, put one or two es on the key; to set on c, the same; to set on d, the same. An CL may be put with a a without affecting the c, and a b with a (Z without at fecting the (Z. In this way tumblers not in the combination may be kept in the lock.
To open the lock, first push the till in as far as it will go and hold it there while inanipulating the keys. Now to open the drawer on any combination pull any keys set on a as far forward as they will come and let them go gently back to their normal position. Now push any keys on b and let them back. Now pull any keys set on c and hold them there and push any keys set on (6 and hold them there and draw the till out. The e is always in position and need not be touched. If the lock is set on e and 0 only, it works like an ordinary combination-lock. As 0 and d are the opening-keys, one or more of one or the other must enter every combination. a and b when once put in position need not be touched unless thrown out of position by some one moving the keys or by asudden jar of the till, as, being notched on the bottom, they are not liable to move. The object of the double tumblers a l) is that the lock may be set to open on one key only; but if when so set an unauthorized person attempts to open the till he, by moving the keys not in the combination, displaces these tumblers so that if by accident the right key is moved the till remains locked; but the person knowing the combination can easily replace them by following the directions above set forth, as the long slots f of these tumblers permit of their being moved to put them in the right position without being displaced by the return movement of the levers II. The bell also rings every time the till is pulled forward.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a combination lock and alarm, the combination, with a casing having a transverse slot in its top and secured in atill, of a locking-bar pivoted on the said casing and adapted to pass into the said slot, and an arm pivoted on the table and adapted to engage an aperture in the said locking-bar, substantially as shown and described.
- 2. In a combination lock and alarm, the combination, with a casing having a transverse slot and secured in the till, of a locking bar pivoted on the said casing and adapted to pass into the said slot, an arm pivoted on the table and adapted to engage an aperture in the said locking-bar, and slotted tumblers held to slide longitudinally in the said casin g and adapted to be engaged by the said locking-bar, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a combination lock and alarm, the combination, with a casing having a transverse slot and secured in the till, of a lockingbar pivoted on the said casing and adapted to pass into the said slot, an arm pivoted on the table and adapted to engage an aperture in the said locking-bar, slotted tumblers held to slide longitudinally in the said casing and adapted to be engaged by the said lockingbar, levers pivoted in the said casing and serving to shift the said tumblers, and rods extending along the outside of the till and connected with the said levers, substantially as shown and described.
4. In a combination lock and alarm, the combination, with a casing having a transverse slot and secured in a till, of a lockingbar pivoted on the said casing and adapted to pass into the said slot, an arm pivoted on the table and adapted to engage an aperture in the said locking-bar, slotted tumblers held to slide longitudinally in the said casing and adapted to be engaged by the said lockingbar, levers pivoted in the said casing and serving to shift the said tumblers, rods extending along the outside of the till and connected with the said levers, and finger-pieces secured on the front ends of the said rods for operating the latter, substantially as shown and described.
5. In a combination lock and alarm, the combination, with a casing having a transverse slot and secured in the till, of a lockingbar pivoted on the said casing and adapted to pass into the said slot, slotted tumblers held to slide longitudinally in the said casing, le-
vers pivoted in the said casing and engaging the said slotted tumblers, rods for operating the said levers and held on the outside of the till, and springs engagingthe said levers, so as to hold the latter in an upright position, substantially as shown and described.
6. In a combination lock and alarm, the combination, with a casing having a transverse slot and secured in the till, of slotted tumblers held to slide longitudinally in the said casing, a locking-bar pivoted on the said casing and adapted to passinto the said transverse slot and into the slots of the said tumblers, an arm pivoted to the table and adapted to engage an aperture in the said locking-bar, a fixed projection held on the said table, and a gravity-lever fulcrunied on the said lockingbar, a striker held on the said locking-bar and engaged by the said gravity-lever, and a bell secured to one side of the said casing and operated on by the said striker,substantially as shown and described.
