JOHN B. DEEDS AND DAVID A. BRIDWELL, OF TERRE HAUTE, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SMOKE-JACKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,606, dated June 13, 1876; application filed April 25, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN B. DEEDS and DAVID A. BRIDwaLL, of Terre Haute, county of Vigo, and Stateof Indiana, have invented a new and useful Enprovement in Smoke-Jack for Locomotive Round-Houses, of which the following is a specification:
The accompanying drawing represents a vertical central section ofour improved smokejack for locomotive round-houses.
The object of our invention is to provide locomotive round-houses with smoke flues or jacks, by which a direct draft from the smokestacks of the locomotives to the outside of the roof of the round-house is produced, and thereby the raising of steam facilitated at a saving of fuel,.the drip of the flue collected and reconducted to the stack, and the escape of smoke and sparks prevented, so as to secure the house from danger of fire by escaping sparks.
The invention consists of a-flue or jack with movable and balanced hood and outside ventilators. The movable hood adjusts itself automatically by: surrounding conical rim, with drip-holes, to the top of the locomotive smoke-stack.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawing, A represents a smoke flue orjack, of suitable sheet metal, and of a size corresponding to the diameter of the smokestacks of locomotives. The jack A extends through the roof of the round-house to suitable height above the same, and is provided at the top part with ventilating-tubes B and protecting top caps B, that prevent the wind from blowing down the flue. Any approved ventilator construction that secures the required draft in the flue A may, however, be applied, as we do not confine ourselves to the special arrangement shown. The lower part of the flue or 'leeting on the flue to the stack. of the smoke'fiues in locomotive round-houses jack A is arranged at such height above the floor or track of the round-houses that the smoke-stacks may readily pass below the same. The lower part is made of somewhat larger diameter than the upper part, for the purpose of guiding the movable section or hood (3, that is equal in diameter with the upper part of the flue. ed by a central rod, and from a fulcrumed top rod, 1), that passes to the outside of flue, and has a weight, d, hung thereto, which nearly counterbalances the hood, so that the same moves readily up and down in the lower enlarged section of the flue. To the lower edge of hood (J is applied an extension rim or flange, D, of inverted conical shape, along which the top of the locomotive smoke-stack passes, so as to gradually raise the hood until tbe stack is vertically below the flue. Drip-holes e at the lower edge or joint of the hood and conical flange conduct the drip col- The utility is obvious, as they, keep the same free of smoke and sparks, and admit the readier getting up of steam without any danger of fire to the building.
Having thus fully described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with jack-flue A, of a hood, 0, movable up and down therein, and provided with a flange, D, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. A hood for jack-fines, provided with the holes eat the junction of body with the flange D, as and for the purpose specified.
