' This invention relates to a take-up device forvuse in connectionwith brasses carried by astrap for a connecting rod.
As is well known, the breaking of brasses employed for connecting rods is generally I caused by the .brasses becoming loose from the strap due to wear,resulting in apounding action which terminates in the breaking of the brasses and it is the object of this in- 10, vention to provide, in a manner as herein. after set forth, a device of the class referred toincluding a take-up gib for retainingthe brassestight in the strap under such'condi-, tions greatly reducing, if not entirely eli1ni-- nating the trouble caused by broken brasses.

The inner face of the top of the strap 1 is cut away to'provide atransverse groove of appropriate width and which includes a top'wall 4 and a pair of side walls 5, 6. The points of mergence of the top wall 4 with the side walls 5, 6 are rounded as at 7. The 8 groove is of appropriate width and has mounted therein a hardened steel gib 8 of a length corresponding to the width of the groove and of a width corresponding to the length of the groove. The side walls of the groove prevent the longitudinal shifting of the gib 8 relative to the top portion 9 of the strap 1. j
The upper face of the portion 9 of the strap 1 is formed with a vertically disposed collar 10 provided with interior threads 11 for the purpose of connecting a lubricant supply cup thereto. The portion 9 of strap 1 is furthermore formed with a vertically disposed opening 12 which extends from the inner to the outer face of portion 9 and the purpose of'the opening 12 will be presently referred to. T he portion 9 of strap 1 is furthermore provided with two pairs of openings, one pair indicated at 13 and the other pair at 14. The wall of each of said openings is threaded. The pair of openings '13 is arranged rearwardly with respect to the open ing 12, as well as spacedtherefrom and the pair of openings 14 is arranged forwardly retaining screws 15 for the gib and which bear upon" the latter between its transverse median andeach end thereof. The screws 15 which extend through openings 13 bear on the gib 8 at two spaced aligning points. The

The screws .15 extend a substantial distance above the top of the strap 7 and carry clamping nuts16 for rigidly maintain ing the screws 15 in set'position. Theclamping nuts are arranged in pairs, and the" inner of the nuts bear against the upper face of strap 7 The gib 8 centrally thereof isipro vided with an opening 17 having a threaded wall and engaging with the threads of said wall is the lower end of a vertically disposed lubricant conducting sleeve or tube 18 which extends upwardly through the opening12' and provides means for conducting lubricant to the brasses 2 and these latter have lubricant conducting.passages'19. "The sleeve 18 has peripheral threads on its lower portion only. The sleeve 18 opens into a transverse grooveQO formed inthe lower face ofthe g1b'8.g The groove 20 is provided in order to keep pressure off the brasses at the thinnest point where in general practice brasses are released on the bearings at this point. This release in the gib can be made any length to suit strength'of brass at such point. r
The sleeve 18 conducts the .lubricant in a manner to the hearing so that the lubricant will not be supplied between the strap. andthe' gibJ The sleeve 18 is slidably mounted in the opening 12 and bodily shifts .downwardly with the gib 8 when the latter is adjusted through the medium of the screws The arrangement of the screws relative to the gib 8 provides a means of taking up wear 7 and positively locking thegib throughout when wear is taken-up. This eliminates fi ing or machining strap as in the general practice when overhauling rods at the present time. The sleeve 18 not only provides for conducting the lubricant to the hearing but also functions to prevent longitudinal and transverse shift of the gib.
It is thought the many advantages of a take-up device 'inaccordance with this invention and for the purpose set forth can be readily understood, and although the pre- "ferred embodiment of the invention is as illustratedand described, yet it isto be understood that changes in the details of construcscope of the invention as claimed.
