present type of piston construction makes necessary the withdrawal of the piston and its rod from a cylinder in order that access to the piston pin or its bearings may be had. In this way and where a crank case is present, considerable time and labor are required in taking down the parts and re-assembling the same 1n order to perform the relatively simple job of rebushing a piston pin hearing.
The general object of the present invention is to provide a construction in pistons adapted for permitting ready access to the piston pin and bearings of a motor, pump and the like without requiring the removal of the piston and its rod from the cylinder.
The above and other objects are accom plished by instrumentalities pointed out in the following specificationf The invention is clearly defined in the claims.
A satisfactory embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming part of the specification and in which Figure 1 is a vertical cross section of the invention in use.
Figure 2 is a view at right angles to Figure 1, with a portion'of the piston Wall broken away to disclose the construction and relation of other parts.
In the drawings, a indicates the piston rod and b the piston pin. These parts are of ordinary construction and form no part of the present invention. 0 is the piston and, in effecting connection between the parts a, 'b and 0, use is made of a hanger, indicated generally by d. The hanger d is preferably formed of a single casting of suitable metal, such as cast iron. 5 is a circular boss cast or otherwise formed integral with the central of transverse area as shown, and are arranged in coaxial relation. The base 8 of hanger (i is symmetrical in transverse section and has in the lower face thereof a transverse openended and semi-circular-shaped groove 9 which provides the upper half of the bearing for the piston pin 6. A medially disposed transverse recess 10 in the lower face of base 03 and disposed at right angles to groove 9 provides a clearance for the upper end of rod (1 as the same oscillates while in use.
Two straps of ordinary construction and respectively indicated by 11 and 12 provide the lower portion of the bearing for pin 5, each of said straps having a medially disposed transverse groove 13 for one of the projecting end portions of the pin 6 beyond rod a. Each of the straps 11 and 12 is connected to the base 8 by a pair of bolts 14 which pass upwardly through alining openings in the straps and base and extend beyond the upper face of the base where they are secured by nuts 15. The portion of the hanged d. between the base 8 and upper end portion 7 is reduced so as to provide two webs respectively indicated by 16 and 17, these Webs being so disposed that one extends transversely of the other and their outer edges curve, inwardly and outwardly. In this way a clearance is provided between the upper end portion 7 and base 8 so as to accommodate the upper ends of the bolts 14 and nuts 15, and to afford access to the nuts with a suitable tool. The upper end portion 7 is centrally provided with a screw threaded socket which alines with the central opening 18 in the lower end of a counterbored central portion 19 of head 6, the opening in the upper end portion 5 receives a screw 20 which operates to rigidly secure the hanger d to the piston c, a lock Washer 21 or the like being employed to prevent accidental turning of the screw and loosening of the parts. The counter-bored portion 19 is provided for the reception of a socket wrench or the like employed for engaging the head 22' of the screw in the operation of turning the same to secure the piston to the hanger or to eflect the disengagement of the parts.
When the device of the present invention is used in connection with a hydro-carbonmo tor, such as the motor of a motor vehicle, the
operation of rebushing the piston pins or examining the piston pin bearings may be readily accomplished when the cylinder head is removed at the time of removing carbon from the cylinders, or at such other times as may be necessary. It will be noted that when screw 20 is removed from the position shown 7 in Figures 1 and 2 the piston may be readily withdrawn from the cylinder and thereby leave the hanger (5 fully exposed. The hanger may be readily disconnected from the pin b by removing the bolts 14 in the usual manner. In this connection it will be noted that when parts of the hanger are taken down or detached from the pin 6, the operation of re-' bushing the hearing may be readily accomplished. After thenew bearings are in place and the parts arranged as shown in Figures 1 and 2, and before replacing the piston, the operation of rocking the hanger upon the pin 1) may be readily accomplished in order to properly adjust the bushing to the pin.
Although I have shown and described one embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of various changes; and I reserve the right to employ such as may come within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. The combination with a piston and a wrist pin, of means for connecting said pin and piston together," said means including a hanger forming one-half of the wrist pin bearing and straps forming the other half of the bearing, bolts for securing said straps to said hanger and being adjustable from the top when the piston is removed, and a cap screw securing said piston to said hanger, said screw being accessible from the top of the piston.
2. In combination, a piston, a wrist pin,
a hanger interposed between said pin and 7 piston, straps cooperating with said hanger for removably connecting said pin to said hanger, bolts for securing said straps to said hanger, and being adjustable from the top for taking up wear, and means removably connecting said hanger to said piston,-said means being accessible from the top of the piston.
