Description

UNIED JOHN B. RALSTON, OF ROCKFORD, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND MATHEW HARVEY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SULKV-PLQWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,558, dated June 13, 1876; application filed December 30, 1875.
To all whomit may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN B. RALsTON, of the city of Rockford, State of Illinois, have invented a Olampin g Device to Connect Plows to a Bulky Attachment, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to provide a clamping device capable of receiving plows having beams differing in size and of any of the usual forms, and hold the plow rigid vertically, and to permit of a free rocking or tilting movement thereof vertically, and a lateral swinging movement, which, when desired, may be rendered rigid bythe insertion of a screw, bolt, or pin. To this end Ihave devised and constructed the device which I now proceed to describe.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view; Fig. 2, a rear elevation; Fig. 3, a side elevation; Fig. 4, a vertical section on dotted line on plan view; and Fig. 5, a View of the under side of the side clampingplates, and are designed to represent my invention, in which- A is a box, substantially such as are used for the bearings of shaftiug in machinery, and is designed to receive a crank-formed axle of the sulky attachment, or acounectin g link or other device, by which it is connected to the sulky in such a manner as to permit of a free rocking or tiltingmovement on its hearing; and consists ofa cap, a, and bed-plate b,
' provided with plate-formed flange 0, and held in place by screw bolts d. This boX is mounted on a base-plate, B, to which it is connected by a swivel-joint by means of a king-bolt, e, which passes upward through the base-plate B and the box A, and is titted with checknuts, and held in such a manner as to permit of afree lateral swinging movement of the plow when attached. The flange-plate c and base B are provided with holes to receive the bolt f, which, when inserted, will prevent any lateral swinging movement of the swiveled base-plateB, or ofthe plow thereto attaohed, the bolt to be used when circumstances require the plow to be held on the carriage rigid laterally.
The base-plate B is provided with transverse slots h, countersunk, to receive the square heads k of clamping-bolts l, which pass through the slots h, in which they are adjustablelaterally, for thepurpose of receiving plowbeams (littering in size, and plows cutting furrows differing in width. The baseplate B is provided on its under side with diverging sawtooth corrugations to receive the corresponding corrugations m on the upper surface of the side clam ping-plates O, which are provided with vertical flanges a to embrace the sides of the plow-beams D. The plates 0 are also provided with bossed oblique slots 0, having the same direction of the corrugations m, and by the clamping-bolts lare held in contact with the base plate B, by screw-nuts p, in such a manner as to permit them to be driven rearwardly; and, being guided by the corrugations, the flanges will be forced against the sides of the plow-beam, griping it firmly sidewise. A slotted clamping-bar, E, is provided, which is passed onto the clamping-bolts l, on the under side of the beam D, and by means of thescrew-nuts s the beam is held firmly between the clamping-bar E and base-plate B.
By means of the above devices the plowbeam is firmly clamped on all four sides.
The box A is provided with perforated cars If, for the reception of a chain or link to c011- nect it with a raising and lowering device for the'purpose of raising and lowering the plow to work at ditferent depths, and to carry the plow in turning or in transportation.
I claim as my invention-- 1. The combination of base-plate B and clamping-plates O, corrugated, substantially as described, and clamping-bolts Z, operatingto clamp the plow-beam sidewise, and to adapt it to plow-beams differing in width and to plow-cutting furrows of different widths, substantially as hereinbet'ore set forth. 2. The base-plate B and side clampingplates 0, corrugated,- substantially as described, clamping-bolts l, and clamping-bar E, in combination with the box A, swiveled thereto by king-bolt connection, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
JOHN B. BALSTON. Witnesses:
O. P. BRADY, MATTHEW HARVEY.
