ADOLFHUS E. BROOKS, OF JEFFERSON, GEORGIA.
CULTIVATO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 275,577, dated April 10, 1883,
Application filed November 2, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
. Beit known that I, ADOLPHUS E.'BROOKS, of Jefferson, Jackson county, Georgia, have invented certain Improvements in Cultivators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is a cultivator having a frame constructed and attachments for the plowbearers arranged, as fully described hereinafter, so as to insure great strength and simplicity, light weight and durability, and adapt the implement to be readily modified according to the work to be done.
' In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view illustrating the implement as arranged to support two cultivator-beams, the wheels removed. Fig. 2 is a rear view illustrating the same with four beams. Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view. Fig. 4 is a detail view; and Fig. 5 a sectional elevation, showing the arrangement adopted for a single plow beam.
The frame consists of two side bars, 9 g, two front bars, h h, secured at right angles to the side bars on the same line, but separated, as shown, an arched axle, j, having journals for the wheels A A, and to which the rear ends of the bars 9 g are attached, and a central pole, B, carrying a cross-bar, k, at the same height from the ground as the top of the axle, and connected to the bars h h, by brace-irons i. A yoke, (J, bolted to the bars h h, is also secured to and aids in supporting the pole. The seat D is secured at the rear end of 'the pole. I thus secure a strong, but light and durable arched frame, supporting the pole and seat in an elevated position, securing the desired height without the use of wheels of large diameter.
Beneath each bar h is adjustably secured by clips 0 c a hollow bar or shaft, d,on which turn boxes a, at the ends of the plow-beams E E, adjustable collars b b, secured to the shafts d by set-screws, limiting the lateral positions of the boxes without preventing them from turning on the shaft when the beams are raised and lowered. Such elevation of the beam is effected by levers F, pivoted to the axle j, and connected by chains 8 to the beams in any suitable manner. One or more of the beams may be readily detached by simply loosening the clips 0, drawing out the shaft d laterally from the clips and from the box of the bearer to be detached. The shaft may then be again secured in position to support. the remaining beam. Figs. 2 and 3 show four beams in place. Fig. 1 shows but two beams in position. It is best to employ the beams in pairs, in which case the rear ends are connected by a cross-bolt, n, to which the chains may be attached.
Fenders e 6 may be secured to the inner sides of the beams to prevent the plows from covering smaller plan ts with dirt. These are, of course, removed when the implement is used as a cultivator.
When a single turner or subsoil-plow is desired all the beams are detached and a yokebar, G, of the form shown in Fig. 4, is used, the journals an are inserted in the ends ofthe hollow shafts d, and the plow-beam is clipped to the center cross portion of the bar, so that as the latter is raised or lowered the inclination of the beam will be altered to bring the plow to any desired angle. The rear of the beam is connected to one of the chains 8, so that it can also be adjusted vertically. Plowstandards may be secured to the beam so ar' ranged, or it may serve as a support for harrow bars or scrapers, according to the work to be done.
It will be noted that the pole is extended to support the seat at the rear of all the plows. This not only enables the driver to watch the work of each part of the implement, but further counterbalauces the weight of the front of theimplement, and takes the load from the horses.
A detachable chopping device can be connected to any suitable part of the implement, and a spur-gear may be secured upon such device to drive it.
. I claim- 1. The combination, with the frame, of the separated hollow shafts d d, clamped detachably beneath the front bars of the frame, supporting the hollow boxes of the plow-beams and adapted .to receive the ends of a yoke-bar, G, substantially as set forth. 2. The combination of the frame, separated hollow shafts d d, bar G, the ends extending into the shafts, and beam supported thereby, as specified.
In testimony whereot'l have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ADOLPHUS E. BROOKS. Witnesses:
L. SGHEVENELL, W. B. Jackson.
