Description

Dec. 16, 1930. w. c. HIERING BAG FRAME CLASP Filed Oct. ll, 1928 ATTORNEY Patented Dec. 16, 1930 Nire- Aras :PATENT torri WILLIAM c. HIEEING, E NEWARK, NEW LTEESEY, AssIGNoR To El iv'rERGoT'r CoM- PANY, oF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION 0E DELAWARE BAG-EEAME cLAsr j' `Application led October 11, 1928; Seria`1VNo. j311','v?50.
The present invention has reference to im? provements in bag fasteners for bag frames of that type especially adapted for use on ladies" hand bags, pocket-books, satchels, 5 purses and like receptacles, and the invention relates more fully to a novel construction of a locking claspv connected frame members of said receptacles.
One; object of this invention is the provision of a neat clasp composed essentially of three parts, namely, a base plate, a cap, and a body portion intermediate said plateand with the cap, the body portion of the clasp having integral lugs extending downwardly therefrom and engaging with a torsional spring within one of a pair of frame members, the spring normally urging the clasp into engagement Iwith a projection on the mating frame mem- Another object of my invention is to provide a clasp, to the intermediate body portion of which a strip of material, preferably similar to that with which the bag frame duce tarnishing of the clasp. to a and enhance the beauty of the bag.
Another object of my invention is in the minimum provision of a bag fastener clasp whose va rious arts may be made from ordinary sheet metal y the use of simple punches and dies,
thereby reducing the cost of manufacture to a minimum.
These and other objects, whichwill become apparent as the description progresses, are accomplished by the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a'material part of this disclosure, and in which:
Figure 1 represents a side elevational view of a clasp, forming the subject matter of this invention, mounted on leather covered bag frame members, the clasp being covered with a corresponding strip of leather, and parts of the frame being broken away to show the Y.
manner in which the clasp is hinged to the frame.
Figure 2 represents an enlarged cross-sectional View taken on lines 2*-2 of Figure 1.
members are Covered may be Secured to re and, owing to its torsional characteristics, it
.vided in the base iiattened 4loops 18 formed -by turning-theV vapertured element 14 upwardly and against the blank l2, at 15, -where it may be securedf in any desired or convenient manner, said loopsbeing adapted to pass through apertures 16 provided in the base plate 17 and (through 'corresponding vapertures 16 pro vided in one of the frame members 18, to receive within them the correspondingly flattened tang 19 of atorsional spring 20. v
l The head2l of the spring 20 abuts against one of the walls of the bag frame member 18,
normally urge-s the clasp 10 downwardly to permit a projection or nosing 22 provided on the mating frame member 23 to be received within said clasp through an aperture 24 vprop plate 17, ,for locking engagement therewith.
Secured to the top of the body portion 11, is a cap 25,preferably, made from a blank similar to the blank yfrom which the base plate is made,` except that the apertures 16-16 and 24, cut in the base plate blank, are omitted from said cap.- V'Ihecap 25, body portion 11, and. base platel'?, may be secured together in any. desired or convenient manner.
The clasplO- is of sturdy structure, and, beingcomposed essentially of only three parts, is susceptible of rapid and economical manufacture andl assemblage. `Because `of its structure, the clasp 10 is adaptedto receiveacovering strip 26, such as leather or the like, on its body portion 11. Y 7
.The clasp: 10 vmay be disengaged from the nosing 22, to lopen the bag, by manually tilting the clasp l0 backward so that it will` clear said nosing. In tilting the clasp, the users fingers come'inn contact With the material 26, instead of With the metal structures usually found in bag clasps, thereby reducing the tarnishing'of the clasp.
The strip of material 26, vpreferablyncorresponds to that Vvvith Which the bag frame members 18 and 23 are covered, or it may be like the material or covering'of the bag body, thereby lending a harmonious appear ance to the' clasp and bag, greatly'enhancing their commercial value. For furthervconformity, in the use of plated bag frames, the outer surfaces of the cap and base-plate 16 `may be similarly plated.
Although the clasp as represented in the drawing, is of generally ovoidal contour, in
` its-preferred form, it may assume any other f desired form.
Althoughv the foregoing is descriptive of theV preferred embodiment of the invention, it will be apparent that minor changes may Y be madein its construction, Without the eX- ercise of invention or conflicting With the scope of the claims Vheretoi appended.
Y Having thus described 'myinventioin what` I claim as nevv and desire to' secure by Let` t ters Patent, is:
1.V A clasp for latching" bag frame memi' bers comprising a base plate, a cap,` and a body portion intermediate said base plate and cap, said body portion having integral loop f extensions passing through Vthe baseV plate 'by which it may be pivotally mounted on a bag frame member;
2.V In a clasp for latching bag` frame members, a base plate, a cap, and a body portion intermediate' said base plate and cap, the
body portion iittingvvithin said base plate and cap'and said body portion being formed from a blank having a rectangular apertured projection bent to 'produce loops passing through and projecting'below the base plate.
3. In combination witha bag frame member provided With a nosing and a bag frame member pivoted thereto `provided With an f aperture, a`- bag frame clasp pivotally mounted en th'e last named ,fra-rnemembr designed tohave frictiona'l engagement with the nosing of the mating frame member, said clasp comprising a base plate provided with an apertured portion to receive said nosing and Y with apertures aligned With the bagframe y aperture,- and-a body portion on the base plate having loops passing Vthrough the aligned apertureslof the' base plate and frame, i
and a spring in the apertured frame member Y in engagement With said loops to normally urge the clasp intoV engagement vvith the nosing.
