Y claims; (o1. 292-204) v This invention relates to handbags ,and has for Vthe desired pre-determined shape. These frame its general object and purpose to provide a simply members at their corresponding ends are hingedly constructed, novel, and ornamental latching connected together as indicated at '7, Throughmeans for the hingedly connected frame partseof out the length of each frame member, the channel 5 the handbag. e e thereof opens outwardly. Within these channels, 60 e More particularly, it is the object'of my inventhe upper andl side edges of the flexible bag orl tion to provide a new latching' means particularly DOuCh material 8, .WhCh eX'eIldS OVeI the Outer designed for use in connection with the inverted side wallsY of the respective frame members, are channel type of handbag frame` which, in addi# engaged, and securely held by clinching the walls lotion to adding to theornamental appearance of of the framemembers thereon. f n
the bag as a whole, may be easily and quickly For the purpose of releasably latching the operated to securely latch the frame parts in frame members 5 and together with theirinner closed face to face contact, or permit the same to walls Ain face to face contact so yas to thereby be easily moved relatively to each other to open securely close the bag, I mount upon the inner 15.; position affording'ac'cess to the Vcontents of the iiange orwall of the top portion of each frame.,70 bag. f l member -a longitudinally extending plate indi- It is a further objectKV of my invention tolpro`` cated at Sand 10 respectively. These plates may vide a device of the above character, which will be of any desired ornamental form, and have their be capable of manufacture at comparativelysmall lower Vportions reduced in thickness as indicated cost, exceedingly strong and durable Vinlts conat 1l to extenddownwardly upon the inner side 75 struction, and in which the cooperating parts are ofthe inner flange of the respective frame memso mounted and arranged that accidental release bers, said reduced portions of the plateproviding of the latch meansand opening of the bag is subthe longitudinally extending shoulders 12 seatstantially prevented. With the above and other ing kclosely upon the upper edges of said frame objects in view,v the invention consists in the imiianges,y while the inner face of the plate is dis- 80` proved handbag and latching means'there'for and posed inthe sameplane'as the inner face -of the in the form, construction, and relative varrangeframe flange.r The parts 12 of thepplates are ment of` its several parts as will behereinafter welded or otherwise permanently secured to the described, illustrated in the accompanying drawframe anges. Thus when4 the two frames are ing, and subsequently incorporated in the subbrought together in closed position, the opposed 85 joined claims. surfaces of the plates 9 and 10, as well as the In the drawing wherein Il have disclosed one opposed surfaces of the inner flanges of the simple, practical embodiment of vmy invention, frame gmembers '5- and' 6 respectively will bein and wherein similar reference charactersdesigface'to` face` contact; r Y A- nate corresponding parts throughout the several As. herein shown, the plate` 9 carried by the 9o views:- y e frame memberl 6 is provided in the outer face Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation, certhereof Withoa recess 13'which-receives an annular; tain parts being shown in section illustratingl one Washer plate y14 secured uponthe `reduced end 16 embodiment of the present invention;` of the stud r15 projecting from .one side of the 4o Fig. 2 is a top plan view; i Y latchmember 1'?. The washer plate 14 has an 95 Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional View on an enlarged eccentric vportion indicatedat 14 which is adapt-r scale taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;. e l edtofrictionally-bnd upon the circumferential Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail elevation illustrat" wall `ofthe recessl at oppositeendsof thefeccenf ing the mounting of the movable latch part upon trically curved portion 1,13 of said wall.- Thus one of the frame members; and rotative ymovementl of V the latch*- member 4'l'lfin 10o Fig. 5 is a fragmentary perspective View showeach direction will be limited. This feature, ing the frame parts separated. however, is of secondary importance, and may,
Referring in detail to the drawing, for purposes if desired, be eliminated.
of illustration, I have shown my invention as The plate 10 on the other frame member 5, as
g applied to a bag frame now generally referredto herein shown, is provided with a central opening 105 as of the Yinverted channel type, in which each of 18 therethrough corresponding in its general the bag frame members designated 5 and 6, reshape or contour to the shape of the latch memspectively, is in the form of an inverted U-shaped ber 17, and at opposite sides of this central opensheet metal strip, said metal strips being bent at ing the additional ornamental openings 19 are l` spaced points to provide a bag frame member of formed through said plate, while corresponding 1410 openings 20 are likewise formed in the other plate 9 at each side of the latch member 17.
In the form of my invention as herein shown, the opening 18 and the latch member 17 are of polygonal shape, preferably of diamond shape form. In order to latch the bag frame members inclosed position, `the `member 17 is first turned-to position its longer axis horizontally or parallel with the top of the frame member as shown in Fig. 5. The two frame members and the plates 9 and 10 are then brought together in face to face contact with each other, the latch member 17 passing freely through the opening 18. Said latch member is then turned through an angle of 90 so as to position its longer axis` vertically and dispose the ends of said diamondshaped latch member in ,.engagementwith thevv surface of the plate 10 aboveand below the opening 18 therein. As the latch member is moved toA this position the periphery of the washer plate 14 frictionally binds against the edge wall'of theV recess 13 lin th'e plate 9, which tends to prevent the accidental or unintentional turningy movement of the latch member l7'to a position in longitudinal'alignment with the opening l18, so that the twoframe members might become separated. `When the member 17 is in its latching position,l as shown in Fig. 3, the two frame members and the plates 9 and 10 are securely latched substantially, throughout their length in face to face contact with each other.
From the foregoing description considered in connection with the accompanying drawing, the
`construction and manner of operation of my present invention will be clearly and fully understood. It will be seen that I have devised an improved'latchV means for handbags and the like, which is simple and-very durable inits construction, may be easily and quickly operated and may be produced in various shapes or forms to materially enhance the ornamental appearance of the bag without greatly increasing the manufacturing cost thereof. `While lI have herein shown produced invarious other detailed forms, and, I,v
therefore, 'reserve theprivilege of all such legitimate changes as may be fairly embodied withinthe'spiritand scope of the invention as claimed.V
I claimz- Y -1.
