Description

E. R. NEBELING CLASP.
APPLICATION FILED FEL-IT, l92l.

' INVENTOR WITNESSES E E/Ysasuwa ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDMUND RICHARD NEBELING, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
CLASP.
Application filed February 17, 1921. Serial No. 445,724.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDMUND R. NEBELING, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Clasp, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in separable fasteners, and it pertains more particularly to clasps for bracelets, necklaces and similar articles of jewelry.
It is one of the objects of the invention to provide a separable fastener in which the elements are securely held against accidental displacement when in the locked position.
It is a further object of the invention to provide means for locking the securing member against accidental displacement.
It is a still further object of the invention to provide a device of this character with a minimum of moving parts.
With the above and other objects in view, reference is had to the accompanying drawings in which-- Figure 1 is an elevation showing the use of the device with the samev in its closed locked position.
Fig. 2 is a similar view with the device in its open position.
Fig. 3 is a view in elevation partly broken away, of one of the elements of the separable fastener.
Fig. 4 is an end view thereof, and
Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the device comprises two members 5 and 6. The member 5 is a metal plate formed on one of its edges with a flange 7 to which flange is secured a plurality of rings or other suitable fastening elements 9. This plate 5 is provided with an eye 10, preferably U- shape in cross section and secured to the plate by means of its legs 11..
The member 3 comprises a housing or boxlike structure provided with a centrally-disposed opening 12 adapted to receive the eye 10 of the member 5. Pivotally mounted within the housing 6, by means of a pin or the like 13, is a lever 14, and said lever has one of its ends offset as indicated by the reference character 5. This lever 14 is provided intermediate of its ends with a projecting lug 16, the outer'edge of which terminates flush with one edge of the opening 12 as indicated by the reference character 17 in Fig. 3. The lever 14 projects beyond one end of the housing to form an operating portion 18, which latter is notched as at 19, in order to provide a grip therefor. The lever is provided upon its'upper face with a rib or lug 20, and said rib or lug 20 is adapted to be received within a notched portion 21 in the upper wall of the member 6 to retain the lever against movement about its pivotal point when said lever lug 20 is engaged in the notch 21. The member 6 is provided with attaching rings 9 similar to those carried by the member 5 in order that ribbon or the like 25 may be secured thereto.
WVith the parts in the position shown in Fig. 2, the eye is inserted in the opening 12 and the lever 14 is moved to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3. As the lever is moved to this position, the locked projecting portion 16 thereof passes into the eye 10 and secures the members together. As the lever is swung about its pivotal point to this position, the lug or rib 20 of the lever engages in the notch 21 of the housing 6 to secure the lever in the locking position and preventing accidental displacement thereof and a separation of the two members.
F rom the foregoing it will be apparent that the present invention provides a clasp in which springs or the like are dispensed with and the movingparts thereof reduced to a minimum. At the same time, a device of this character is provided which is positive in its operation and locking action.
I claim- A separable fastener comprising a housing having an opening therein, a pivoted lever mounted in the housing, said pivoted lever having a projection adapted to extend across said opening in the housing when the lever .is in looking position, a member adapted for interengagement with the housing and having a loop adapted to be received within the opening in said housing and in the path of the projection of said lever, a right-angular wall formed upon one side of the said member to prevent relative movement be tween the housing and said member when in closed position, and an integral projecting lug formed on said lever and adapted to be received within a notch in one of the walls of the housing to prevent accidental displacement of the lever and movement thereof from closed to open position.
EDMUND RICHARD NEBELING.
