This invention relates to hats; and more particularly, to hat brims. V

The prime object is to produce a hat with a turned down brim in front which will retain its shape and which will have a welt ex tending around the rear portion so as to give 7 the appearance of a welted hat when viewed from the rear, and at the same time, will give all the advantages of a hat having a welt extending around the outer periphery of the brim, and yet permit the turning down ofthe front edge, so as to give the style of a snap front. 7

Heretofore, hats have usually been finished with a raw edge on the brim, or with what is commonly known as a welted brim. Where the brim is welted, which consists in turning the raw edge inward upon itself and securing the same in position, the hat is not adapted to assume the snap eifect which consists in having the rear portion of the brim turned up and the front portion turned down, whereas where the edge is raw, this effect and style is obtained and usually utilized. If a snap brim is sought with the welted brim, not only is the effect rather undersirable, but the welt in front constantly causes the front portion of the brim to turn up. Where the fsnap effect is obtained with the raw edge hat, the 0 rear portion which is turned up has an unfinished appearance and where the head is unusually long, will tend to pull the hatout of shape, since the welt on the outer. brim serves to retain the shape of the hat. By having the welt extend from the rear of the brim part way to the front, the reinforcing shape-retaining advantage is effected, and the front portion is free to be turned down to give the snap effect; V 7

Numeral 4 designates a hat having a crown 5 secured to a brim 6 in the usual manner. The .brim 6 has a welt 7 formed on its outer edge and extending substantially half-way around the hat and covering more particularly the rear portion of said brim 6. The

Such a hat when viewed from the rear gives the appearance of a welted hat and When viewed from'the front has the pleasing effect of the snap style and yet does not have the unfinished efiect given when the brim has a raw edge. Further, the, welt serves to retaintthe hat in shape when the wearer has an unusual shaped head, and further serves to retain thestyle when the same ,has once been shaped. Thus, I have a hat thatpossesses the advantage of the welted brim and the advantages of the raw edge brim, with none of the disadvantages.

Having described my invention, what I claimis: 1: Ahaticomprising a brim, having a raw front portion 9 of the-brim has a raw'edge edge in front and a welted portion in the rear so that the front portion may be turned down and the rear portion turned up,- the welted portion serving to reinforce and retain the shape of the hat. '1

2. A hat comprising a brifn having a. raw

edge formed on the front portion thereof extending substantially to the middle of the hat, a welt formed on the rear portion of the brim and extending to substantially the middle of the hat, the intersectionof the raw edge and Welted edge forming an axis for thebrim V 7 upon which the front portion may beturned down and the rear portion turned up.
