' w.o. BERMAN CAP Filed May 51, 1921 Wall 21am @Eermam INVENTOR federated Felix. ld dh i t rr a 1 '2 l "are t me o Cit-.19.
Application filed. May 31,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that l. WVILLIAM O. EERMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing;- at Camden, in the county of Camden and State of New soy, have invented new and useful lmproveinents in Caps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to headrrear or corering and more particularly to cans for wear by men and boys the object being to provide a neat and artistic piece of headwear.
Another object of the invention is to provide a cap of the type referred to which is devoid of all snap fasteners hooks and eyes or other attaching means whereby the frontal portion of the cap is connected to the peak thereof.
Still further the invention aims to provide a new or improved cap which can be compactly folded or rolled up for transportation, whilst at the same time it readily responds to its normal finished appearance when unrolled or unwrapped for wear.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention consists essentially in attaching the frontal portion of a cap to the peak or vizor thereof whereby considerable economy is effected in the amount of material used.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying}; drawings constituting a part of this specification and in which like characters of reference designate the same or corresponding parts in both the views:
Figure 1 is a side view of a cap embodying one form of my invention, the righthand portion of said figure being broken away or in section for the sake of clearness; and,
Figure 2 is a similar view of a slightly modified form of the invention.
in the drawings the numeral 10 designates a cap which may be made of any suitable material such as cloth or the like, said cap being fitted with the usual leather or similar head -band 11 conveniently sewn therein by lines of stitching 12. In the form of the invention shown in Figure 1 it is to be carefully noted that the frontal part of the cap 13 is folded in at 14: to lie over the reinforcement 15 and that it is carried back to the headband and turned over at 16 to constitute an outlay 17 on the underside of the reinforcement 15, the frontal edge being 1921. Serial No. 473,622.
marginal edge as indicated by the numeral 19. It also to be noted that the str 1 52 is carried througghthe inlay 'e i ment 15 and outlay 1"? as indicated by the. numeral 20. Thus it will be seen that the frontal part of the cap is attached all around the peripheral edge of the visor whereby the necessity for a snap fastener or other at taching means between the inlay and the vizor proper is done away with.
.in the modified. form of the invention it is'to be noted. that the frontal part 13 of the cap 10 is folded over on the underside of the reinforcement 15 only, and that it is attached. thereto around the peripheral edge by a line of stitching 19, as well as a series of curved lines of stitching 21. In this form of the invention it will be noted that there is a considerable saving in material effected, whilst at the same time due to the flexibility of the reinforcement 15, the cap can be readily folded up or crushed without in any way marring or damaging; its appearance.
From the foregoing it will be readily seen that by my invention 1 have provided an exceedingly attractive and novel form of cap for wear by men and boys, and I wish it clearly understood. that I do not in any way restrict myself either as regards the pattern or materials employed in the manufacture of my improved cap, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes or variations as fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A cap for headwear comprising a crown having a forwardly protruding frontal portion which is turned in and folded downwardly and forwardly upon itself to constitute a visor, said visor being formed with an angularly upturned inner edge, a sweatband secured to the inner lower edge of the crown and to said angularly lip-turned inner edge of the visor portion. a reinforcement within the folded-over visor portion, stitching around the front edge of the visor portion whereby the folded-in portion thereof and reinforcement are securely connected to the lower front edge of the crown. and stitchin around the said angularly upturned inner edge of the visor portion whereby the said visor and the reinforcement therein are securely connected to the lower edge of the sweat-bend.
2. Av can for heedweer comprising a crown having; a forwardly protruding frontal portion which is turned in and folded downwardly and forwardly upon itself to constitute a vieor said visor being formed with en angular-1y lip-turned inner edge a sweatbend secured to the inner lower edge of the crown and said engolerly rip-turned inner edge oi the vigor porti n. a reinforcement with n the foldetbover 1r portion, stitchthe frontal edge of the visor l @1011 where the folded-in portion there oi and the J nforeenient therein are ee- 'E'oldedin portion of i i ieii 1 curely connected to the lower front edge of the crown stitching around the angulerlytin-turned inner edge of the visor portion whereby the folded-in portion of said 'ieor and the reinforcement therein are securely connected to the lower edge of the sweetband, and a series of substantially parallel curvilinear stitohings bet-ween the frontal edge stitching and the inner upturned edge stitching on the visor portion whereby the folded-over visor portions-and the reinforcement therein are securely quilted together.
In testimony whereof I. iii-fix my signature.
WILLIAM o. BERMAN.
