Description
H. WATSON.
FARM-GATES.
Patented June 6 WITNESSES ATTORNEYS N.PETER$. PHOTO-UYHOGRAFMER, WASHlNGYON. D 04 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HIRAM WATSON, OF LINCOLN, OREGON.
IMPROVEMENT IN FARM-GATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [78,494, dated J une 6, 1876; application filed April 15, i876.
is a'transverse vertical sectional view of the same.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of devices for operating a double gate, whereby aperson riding can, without alighting, open a gate and close the same, as will be hereinafter explained.
In the annexed drawings, the capital letters A'A designate two gates, which close in the center of the roadway, and are pivotec' at their outer lower corners, as indicated at a; w. Eachgate is pivoted between two upright posts, B, and is constructed as will be hereinafter explainc d.
The upper ends of the four posts B are framed into a horizontal beam, (3. To the top, near the inner end of each gate, is attached a cord or chain, a, which passes upward and outward over a pulley, 1), near the upper ends of the posts B, and from thence it extends under the horizontal beam 0, to the middle of the length thereof. Both cords or chains a thence extend upward between two grooved pulleys, b, and are connected to the inner end of. a lever, D, which lever is suitably pivoted on top of the beam 0.
For the purpose of retaining the cords or chains a a. two guard-wires,y y, are arranged parallel to each other, in such manner that the said cords or chains are prevented from being caught between the pulleys and the beam G. From the outer end. of the leverD extend two cords, h h, in opposite directions, and pass through eyes 9 g, or over pulleys attached to vertical posts G, the ends of the said cords or chains hanging down alongside of said posts. 7
In practice I will attach weights to the cords or chains It h, in order that they may be used with greater facility, and at the same time be retained in the proper positions. The gates are segments of circles, portions of which are cut so that they will close, and, when closed, will be prevtnted from lateral displacement by a bifurcated support, 70.
The operation is as follows, to wit: By giving a quick pull on either cord h the gates will open outward, and fall over backward by their own gravity, and by again giving a.
quick pull on either cord the gates will shut.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the pivoted gates A A, double posts B, with top beam (J, cords or chains a, pulleys b b, lever l), and cords h h, all arranged in the manner described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
HIRAM WATSON.
