Description
W. I. MCCAUSLAND.
FLUTING-IRQN. 230173.452. Patented June 6, 187B.
wlmasses INVENTOR A I'TORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE}.
WILLIAM I. MOOAUSLAND, OF DALLAS, TEXAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN FLUTING-IRONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,452 dated J une 6, 1876; application filed January 8, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM I. MGGAUS- LAND, of Dallas, in the county of Dallas and thereof.
This invention has relation to improvements in combined tinting and smoothing irons, which are made hollow for the purpose of receiving a heated metallic block which will raise the shell to the proper temperature for smoothing or fluting.
The nature of the invention consists in certain improvements in the construction of fluting and smoothing irons, combined, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawings, the letter A designates a sad-iron of the usual well-known form, but of considerable thickness, the interior of which is hollow, and designed to receive a metallic heating-block, B, of corresponding form with the said hollow. This iron is designed to be operated by means of a handle, 0, which is pivoted in any suitable manner at a to the front end, and at a to the rear end of the said iron, so that the said handle may be turned in suitable position for the convenient operation of either the smoothingsurfaces 1) or'the flirting-surface 0. The rear vertical arm (1 of handle 0 sustains a springlatch, D, which is provided with a spur, 6, extending through the said arm, and engaging with a perforation, f, made in the rear wall of the iron, as shown in Fig. 2. These perforations are cut in the arc of a circle described, with a radius equal to the distance from pivot a of handle 0 to the center of spur e, and at angle of ninety degrees from each other, the perforations being three in number, and each one arranged in reference to a smoothing and to the fluting surface.
The fluting-surface is cast upon a side, E,
of the iron, which is hinged in any suitable manner to the apex or front end of the same, and is held shut by means of a pin, 9, passing through registering-perforations formed in a flange, k, on the hinged sideand in the iron, as shown in Fig. 2. The fluted side E is detachably secured to the iron by means of an angular bolt, F, one arm of which is sprung over a pin, p, in the said side, and is thus prevented from casual detachment.
When this bolt F is withdrawn the fluted side E of the iron may be removed and replaced by another having a finer or a coarser nature, and a single iron is thus rendered capable of doing every description of fluting, since any description of fluting-surface may be heated by a single iron, when secured thereto, as above described.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The hollow iron A, having the smoothing-faces b, detachable hinged side E, provided with the tinting-surface 0, and rear-end face having the spaced perforations f arranged as set forth, in combination wit-h the pivoted handle O and spring-latch D, provided with a spur, e, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with the hollow iron A, the hinged detachable side E, having a fluting-surface, 0, and pin engaging with the detachable angular bolt F, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM IVE-NHOE MCCAUSLAND.
Witnesses:
