The object of my invention is to provide for printing-officesan improved galley, by which the type may be locked in an instant without side-sticks, quoins, and chase, for taking proofs, and unlocked for making corrections without soalin g of type.
The inven tion consists of an adjustable cross bar that is applied by hinged or bucklejoints to the side of the galley, to be readily folded out of the way or locked to the type. I
In the drawing, A represents a galley of the usual construction; B, a hinged or knucklejointed frame that is hinged to and adjusted by slotted plates and set-screws O at the side of the galley. The locking brass bar D extends along side of types, and bears firmly against them when the hinged or knuckleframe B is completely opened. The lockingbar D may also be adjusted to greater or less distance from the. galley by means of slots and clamp-screws of the hinged frame B, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, so as to set it to different width of type, and make it available for any galley in use. The hinged Fig. 2 isa ing proof, the locking-bar is brought against the types, and the knuckle or hinged frame lowered and extended to its full width, giving thereby a firm and complete locking of the type at a saving 'ot' time and labor, as well in the looking as in the unlocking of the types. As, in the lifting of the hinged frame, the. lower part of the locking-bar is f rst withdrawn from the bottom of the types, while the bar still holds the upper part of the type, the locking-bar may be easily released without producing any scaling off of types, which forms an objectionable feature of the locking attachment of galleys heretofore in use.
Having thus described my inventiomwhat I' claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with a printers galley, of anadjustable locking-bar, applied by a hinge or knuckle jointed frame to be folded out of the way or opened to lock the type, substantially as and for the purpose described.
HENRY EDWIN HANNA.
