Be it known that I, WILLIAM Flossmoor, in the county of Cook .and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Combination Blade Extensions and Wings for Road Machines,-
of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to road Working c machines employing a transverse blade of substantial length, sharpened not only at its bottom for scraping the road surface but at itsends for cuttin banks (or piles of material at-the side o the road.
The main object of the invention is to provide a supplementalV upright board or plate which, while suiciently permanently attached to the blade so that 1t cannot be left at the home of the machine or by the roadside, is adjustable to three different positions: (a) that in which it is a forwardly extending wing rendering the blade a conventional form of scraper; (b) that in which it is an extension in substantial alignment with the blade, thereby len thening it for any suit-able purpose; and (c that in which it is supported above and behind the blade toutof the way of the blade in all of its working movements.
The invention consists in mechanism capable-of attaining the foregoing and other ob-` features and details of construction whichA -will beli'ereafter morev fully set forth in the specification'and claims.

The mechanism of this' invention is applicable to the end of any conventional form' of` road machine blade. For the purposes of illustration, the device is shown applied to opposite ends of the blade 10, extending transversely vof the main frame of. a conventional form of road machine 12 sustained by Wheels 14 and v16. The blade is shown conventionally mounted on blade carrying frame 18,^pivoted to the front axle at 20 so as to be controllable in conventional manner by -man-ipulating the Lhandwheels 22. The blade is directly supported from the, fram@I 24 which is conventionally rotatable under the control olf-'operating wheel 26 and gear mechanism 27 between the .angular positions of Figures 2 and 3.
The blade 10 may be of any suitable cross section. In the particularcase here illustrated, it iscurved as shown, for instance, in clot-ted lines Figure 8, and is provided at its bottom with a'v cutting edge 28 engageable with theroad surface and with sharpened vertical end edges 30 adapted for severing earth material from banks or piles lat the side of the road adjacent to the path of travel of the road machine. The problem solved bythis invention is to apply,in proximity to these vertical cutting edges 30, plate or board-members 32 adapted to be selectively moved to the position of Figure 2 in which they, acting asl conventional Wings convertl the blade into a scraper; to
the position of Figure 2a in which they act as conventional extensions of the blade and therefore enable the user to tilt the blade to the angular position of Figure 3 with reference to the main frame 12'of the machine and still scrape full roadwidlih; and, finally, to the position as shown at theirl ft hand portions of Figures 3 and G in which they are simply carried by the macl1ine,'spe cifically by the blade, 'o ut of its way.-
In order to secure .thisdesired result, these plates are carried on supporting hinge mechanisms secured to opposite ends of the blade, the hinge mechanisms being identical except that one is a right hand and the other is a left. These hinge mechanisms or pivotal mounting devices for the plates each include two parallel hinge pivotf shafts or bolts 34 and 3G spaced apart a substantial distance by a compound leaf or lever 40-42, adjustable vertically withreference to cach other i by pinL 44 and slot 46 connections, clearly appearing in Figures 9 and 10. As one plate 40 of this leaf includes one hinge pivot 34 and the other leaf member 42h1- cludes the other hinge pivot 36, it is obvious that when pivot member 36 is rigidly positioned on the blade, as it isby means of the stationary hinge leaf 48 secured in place by bolts or screws 50, the hinge pivot 34 can be adjusted vertically with reference to the blade through the conventional operation of the pin and slot connecting device 44-46. The length of the common leaf 40--42between hinge pivots is such that when theparts arein the position ofFigure 9, the plate 32 attached to hinge :pivot 34 by means of its independent( hinge leaf 52 will .just lit around the end of the blade and act as a wing in conventional manner, and that when the parts are swung into the position show in the left hand half of Figure 6, the plate 32 is carried toward the center of the piachine a very substantial distance awayl rom the. end. cutting edge 30 of 'the blade, thereby leaving that4 end cutting "edge free to act 1n bank cut-ting or the like as may be required of the general machine.

In the general operation of the device, if, the road machine is to use its blade 10 'for normal road cutting operations, with the blade at right angles to the axis of the machine frame as shown in Figures l and 2, the plate 32 will be normally assembled out of use as shown in the left hand half-of Figure 6. If the operator desires' toV shift the blade to the angular position of Figure 3 and yet Wants to 'work full Width oaf road, he will adjust the bolts 114 and 68 and lthe latch 72 to assemble the parts as shown in the right hand half of Figure 6. If the operator desires to use the blade as a scraper for delivering loose dirt in holes along the surface of the r'oad, he will remove the bolts 68 and adjust the plates to the Lvving position of Figure 2 and then replace the bolt 68.
By the use of thedevice described, the road machine driver always has the Working plates 32 with `him when he Wants to use them and he can at will use them as Wings or extensions IVhat I! claim is:

4. In mechanism of the class described',
a cutting blade, a dirt controlling plate, a pivotal mounting device attaching the plate at the end of the blade so constructed and arranged that the plate may be selectively located at 90 to the front of the blade, in approximate alignment with the blade, or at 180 from that position and on the back of the blade, selectively lockable 'means rigidly coniining the plate and blade in each of said first two mentioned positions,
and means selectively positioning the entire pivotal mounting across the blade length Wise of its cutting end. t'
5. In mechanism of the class described, a cutting blade, a d-irt controlling plate, a pivotal mounting device attaching the plate at the end of the bladeso constructed and arranged that the plate may be selectively located at 90 to the front of the blade, in approximate alignment with the blade, or
at 180 from that position and on the backof the blade, and means selectively positioning the plate in the arc of a circle about a point on the pivotal mounting device.
6. In mechanism of the class described, a cutting blade, a dirt controlling plate, a pivotal mountingdevice attaching the plate at the end of the bladey so constructedand arrangedthat .the plate may be selectively" located at 90 to the front of the blade, in approximate alignment with the blade, or
at 180 from that position and on the back of the blade, selectively lockable means rig idly confining the plate and blade in each of said first two mentioned positions, and means selectively positioningfthe plate in the arc of a circle about a point on the pivotal mounting device.

In mechanism of the class described. a cutting blade, a dirt controlling plate. a pivotal mounting device attaching the plate at the end of the blade so constructed and arranged that the plate may be selectively located at 90 to the front of the blade, in approximate alignment witlijthe blade, or at 180 from that position and on the back of the blade, means selectively positioning the entire pivotal'mounting across the blade lengthwise of its. cutting end, and means selectively positioning` the plate in the arc of a circle about a point on the pivotal mounting device. l

In mechanism of the class described, a cutting blade, a dirt controlling plate, a pivotal n'iounting device comprising two parallel hinge pivots, each carrymg an 1ndependent hinge leaf and a common leaf between them, attaching the plate at the end of the blade, so constructed and arrangedv that the plate may be selectivelylocated at 90o to the front of the blade, in approxi mate alignment with the blade, or at 180 from that position and on the back of the blade, and selectively lockable means rigidly confining the plate and blade in each of said first two mentioned positions.

In mechanism of the class described, a cutting blade, a dirt controlling plate, a pivotal mounting device comprising two parallel hinge pivots each carrying an in` dependent `hinge leaf and a common leaf between them, attaching the plate at the end of the bla-de soconstructed and arranged that the platemay be selectively located at 90o tothe front of the blade, in approximate alignment with the blade, or at 180 from that position and on the back of the blade,
and means selectively positioning the entire pivotal mounting across the blade lengthwise of its cutting end.
12. In mechanism of the class described, a cutting blade, a dirt controlling plate, a
pivotal mounting device comprising two parallel hinge pivots each carrying an independen t hinge leaf and a common leaf between them, attaching the plate at the end of the blade, so constructed and arranged that the plate may beselectively located at 90 to the front of the blade, in approximate alignment with the blade, or at 180O from that position and on the back of the blade, selec-A tively lockable means rigidly conining the plate and blade in each of said first two mentioning thev entire pivotal mounting acrossl tioned positions, and means selectively posithe blade lengthwise of its cutting end.

-means selectively positioning the entire pivopivotal mounting device comprising two parallelhinge pivots each carrying an ndependent hinge leaf `and a common leaf between them, attaching the plate at the end of the blade, soconstructed and arranged that the plate may be selectively located at 90 to the front of the blade ,in approximate alignment with the blade, or at 180o from that position and on the back of the blade, selectively lockable means rigidly confining the plate and blade in each of said first two mentioned positions, means selectively positioning the entire pivotal mounting across the blade lengthwise of its cutting'end, and means selectively positioning the plate in the 'are of a circle about a point on the pivotal mounting device. In mechanism ofthe vclass described two hinges each including two leaves and an intervening pivot, means detachably securing one leaf of each hinge together to make la common leaf, and means adjusting` ing one leaf of each hinge together to make a common leaf, means adjusting the connecting leaves so that one hinge pivot is moved axially parallel to the other hinge `pivot and a quadrant device for detachably securing the common leaf in different angular positions with reference to the other leaf of one .of the hinges.
