Description
W. H. KESTER.
FASTENERS FOR THE MEETING-RAILS OF-SASHES.
No.178f14'5, Patented J-une 6.1876.
UNITED STATES WILLIAM H. KESTER, OFl PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FASTENERS FOR THE MEETING-RAILS OF SASHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,445, dated June', 1876; application filed March 1l, 1876.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. KEsTER, o
, Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia,
and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Sash Locks 01 Fasteners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same. reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of' this specification, and to the letters and gures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a plan or top view of my device, and Fig. 2 is a side view in cross-section. 1
This invention has relation to sash-locks; and it consists in the' construction and novel arrangement ofthe latch with a barrel or vertical eye at its en d, and a hooked lug between said eye and the pivot of' the latch, a reciproeating bolt in said eye, having a flanged foot and a spring on said bolt between the eye and its foot, as hereinafter shown and described.
In'the annexed drawings, the letters A A designate the meeting-rails of' the upper and lower sashes ot' a window-frame. B represents a metallic plate secured upon the top rail A of the upper sash, and cast with a rect- -angular recess, a, in its front, and shoulders b at each end of the said recess, within which is pivoted, by means t' a bolt, c, a horizontally-vibrating arm or lever, C, extending over the rail. The heel of this lever is at right angles to its length, and bears upon a dat metallic spring, D, arranged in recess a, Y
with its ends resting upon shoulders b. As shown in Fig. 2, the-under side of lever C is cut away, as shown at d, and a backwardlyprojecting hook, e, is formed thereon, which engages with a curved llange,f, on a metallic plate, E, secured to the rail A of the lower sash, for a purpose hereinafter explained. F represents a vertically-movable locking-bolt, which passes through a barrel or sleeve, g, on the free end of lever-O. This bolt is provided with a head, h, by means of which it is raised, and a cylindrical enlargement, i, is formed on its lower end, adapted to be received into a correspondingly-shaped recess in a metallic plate, G, rigidly secured to the rail A near its inner edge. The engagement of' the lockingbolt F with the recessed plate G is accelerred to the pivotal point of lever C in plate B, will be received by the curved flange of plate E, owing to theengagement therewith of hook e on the lever.
By this means the plate-.B is protected from all strain, and all danger of breaking the same designedly or from careless handling is effectually prevented. While bolt F is engaged in plate G the lever C will be prevented from vibrating, and a burglar on the outside will be .unable to thrust the said lever aside by passing a knife-blade or other similar device between the rails A A of the sashes. He will also be prevented from tearing the said lever loose from'its fastenings, owing to the engagement of its hook e with plate G, by placing a chisel between the said rails under the lever, and thrusting violently upward.
I am aware that a slotted hooked latch has been provided with a reciprocating bolt without a flanged foot, the spring being seated in the slot of the latch, and I do not claim such invention.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The sash-locking latch herein described, having the vertical eye g at its free end, the hook e between said eye and the pivot of' the latch, the reciprocating bolt F, its flanged foot i, and the supporting-sprin g S, seated between said eye land said foot, on said bolt, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses. WILLIAM H. KESTER.
