PATENT. OFFICE HENRY .r. runs, or IOWA crrY, Iowa 3 PAPER 01.11-

The invention relates to paperclips and a primary object of'the invention is to so. construct a clip of this character that it may be easily adjusted for use in clamping together a a few sheets or a large number equally well without crimping or buckling of the paper.
Another object of the invention is to so construct a clip of this character that it ma be formed from a single piece of wire and ent 1e to shape and hence cheaply manufacture.
' In carrying out these objects, the invention is susceptible of a wide range of modification without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the claimedinvention; there being shown in the drawings for illustrative purposes a preferredand practical form, in which:
Figure l is a perspective View of a thick package of paper or cards with thisiln proved clip shown applied;
Fig. 2 is a similar View with the clip shown applied to a small package;
Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the clip de tached, and r i i F a is a View similar to Fig. 3 with the clip in reversed position.
In the embodiment illustrated the paper clip comprising this invention is madefrom a piece of wire of any desired or suitable size according to the size of the clip and the use to which it is to be put. This clip which is numbered 1 is formed from a piece of wire by i bending it first into rectangular shape to provide a square loop 2 andthe remainder of the wire is then bent to V-shaped form as shown at 3 and the apex t of this V-shap'ed loop is made of a length to overlie the lower cross bar 5 of the square loop. Both ends of the wire are left free and extend in the same direction,
. one being located at one corner of the clip and the other at the opposite corner thereof.
In the application of the clip the U-shaped portion numbered-6 is applied to one face of.
the package of paper or cards to be clipped as shown in Fig.1 and the V-shapedloop 3 is placed on the opposite face of the package with the connecting bar or rod 7 thereof arranged diagonally across the end of the package.
the two members of the clip will lie flatly When so positioned it will be seen that against the opposed faces of the package and thus securely hold the sheets or cardstogether without buckling or crimping of the paper.
may be made of any gauge wire desired and the clips maybe of any size.
When the clip is placed over a thick package of .paper, no matter how'strong the spring wire may be the V-shaped poriton will be eighth of an inch andby reversing the V- shape member to the opposite side of the lower cross arm, themembers will firmly grip a thin package. This constitutes an essential feature of the invention.
lVithout further description it is thought that the featuresand advantages of the in vention will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art, and it will, of course, be understood that changes in the form, propor- Vsprung at the lower cross arm about one tion and minor details of construction may be it resorted to, without departing from the.
spirit of the invention or its scope as claimed. I claim: p p A paper clip composed of a piece of wire bent to form a U-shaped and a V-shaped clamping member arranged in overlapping relation with a rod connecting the upper cor.- nor of one member with the upper corner or the other member, the free ends of said wire being oppositely positioned at the corners of the clip, and the apex of the V-shaped member lying againstone face of the lower cross bar of the other member and shiftable to position said apex against the other face of said lower cross bar to adapt the members of the clip to effectively clamp the paper when in either position.
