IMPROVEMENT IN DOORfBOLTS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,239, dated June 6, 1876; application filed December 29, 1875. `f
To all whom it may concern' Be it known that I, THOMAS HoEsLY, of the town of New Glarus, in the county .of Green and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and usei'ullinprovement in Door-Lookin g Bolt, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. f
The object of my invention is to provide a door-fastener and locking-bolt for barns and outbuildings, at once so simple, cheap, strong, and convenient as to do away with the trouble and expense attending the use of the ordinary hasp lock and key; and for this purpose I form a metallic slide or bolt, A, of sufcient strength and dimensions, which, with a reciprocating motion, works upon a plate in loops b b or their equivalents, attached to the plate which is fastened to the door. The eX- treme end of bolt 'A enters a keeper, C, attached to the door-post, the rear end of which has a knob or handle for working .it on the outside. A post, D, witha loop on one end and a thread cut on the other, is passed through a slot in the door and the aforesaid plate from the inside, and enters the slide or bolt A about midway, being screwed into the same, which looped post D furnishes a means of working the slide or bolt A, and locking or unlocking the door from` the inside, the locking of the same being accomplished by means of catch E on the inside engaging. the looped post D, so that the same cannot be moved until the catch is raised by the hand. The sliding bolt A is thus easily operated from the inside or outside, and locked by means of lockingcatch E upon the inside, and may be padlocke-d on the outside, looped post D answering the several purposes of a handle by which the door can be pulled together from the inside, the sliding bolt A reciprocated, and a stop for locking-catch E.
I claim as my invention- The sliding-bolt A, provided with and riding upona metallic-plate with its longitudinal slot and loops b b, combined with keeper C, looped post I), and locking-catch E, to form a door locking-bolt for doors and gates, substantially as described and set forth.
