Further objects of'Iny invention are to provide a, combined cigarette package holder and matchbox that is relatively simple in construction, inexpensive of manufacture and which will'conveniently hold a package of cigarettes so thatthe' cigarettes will not become crushed or broken, as is frequently the case when an ordinary packageof. cigarettes is carried in the pocket. ' A further object of my invention is to provide a cigarette package holder of the characterreferred tothatis provided: at oneend, preferably the top, that serves as a closure for the opening thru which the cigarettes are withdrawn, and

which closure, when. closed, retains the cigarettes within the package that is positioned in the holder.

WVith the foregoing and other objects in view,-my invention consists in certain novelfeatures of construction andarrangement of parts that willhereinafter be more 'fullydescribed and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig.1 is a top plan view ofacigarette pack age holder and match box of my irnproved construction. i Fig. 2 is a perspectiveview of the combined holder and match box and showing-the swinging closure in open position to permit the removal of a cigarette. The section or sheet of metal is substantially rectangular in shape and it is bent on. the linesaa to form side walls 10, andthat portion of the sheet of metal between said side walls constitutes the back wall 11 of the cigarette package holder.

Formed integral with the side edges of the side walls 10 are inturned, narrow flanges 12 that serve to hold the package of cigarettes within the container, and formed integral with the lower edges of the side walls 10' and the rear wall 11, are inturned flanges 13 that support the cigarette package when positionedwithin the holder.

Formed integral with the rear portionof one o-fthe'side walls 10 is a rectangular section of lnetal'l'e that is bent into a horizontal plane so as to serve as a top for the cigarette package container, and formed in this top member 14, is a substantiallyT-shaped slot.

F orined integral with the rear portion of the other side wall 10 isa section of sheet metal16 that is bent into a horizontal position so as to 'lie beneath the member 14 at the top of thecontainer, and a portion of this so section 16 is cut to form a'T-shaped tongue 17, which, when the box is bent to proper shape, proj'ects thru the T-shaped slot 15 in member 14, thereby interlockingthe

In order that the upper portion of the 190 I Wrapper of the cigarette package may be readily torn off, after the package has been positioned within the holder, the upper edges per, the torn portion may be drawn downwardly against the sharp edges 20, thereby providing clean cut edges at the sides of the opening thru which the cigarettes are removed.

The match box which, is associated with the cigarette package container and which; is secured to the rear wall 11, 1s formed from a single piece of thin sheet metal, the same be ing shown in blank form in Fig. 4 and said blank includes a front wall portior 21, side walls 22, a top 23 and a bottom 24. The side walls 22 and the top and bottom members 23 and 24 are bent so as to occupy positions at right angles to the front'wall 21,

and integral ears 24 on the edges of the side walls engage thru slots 25 formed in the rear wall portion 11 of the cigarette package contamer, and ears 26'that are formed on the outer, ends of the top and bottom members 7 23 and 24 engage thru slots 27 that are formed in the upper and lower portions of rear wall 11. Ears 28 that are formed on the side edges of the top and bottom members 23 and 24 engage thru slots 29 that are formed in the up] per and loweriedges of the side walls 22 when the section of material forming the match box is bent to proper shape.

, Formed'n the central portion of the front wall 21 of the match box, is an opening 30 which permits matches to be placed in and removed from the box, and formed in said front wall to the sides of this opening are narrow, vertically disposed slots 31.

The closure 32 for the openin 30 in the match box comprises a section of thin sheet metal, and formed on the upper portions of the side edges thereof are ears 33, which engage thru the slots 31, thereby retaining the door or closure for sliding movement onthe outer face of the front wall 21 of the match box. A lip 34 which is cut from the'material forming the closure 32 is bent outwardly from the upper portion thereof andserves as a thumb or finger hold when the closure is opened, and fixed to'the closure just below this outturned lip, is one end of a pin 35 that projects rearwardly thru the match box and the inner end of said pin projects thru a slot 36 that is formed in the central portion of the rear wall 11 of the cigarette package holder. [Secured to the rear portion of the 1 pin 35 and within the match box, is the lower end of a retractile spring 37, the upper end thereof being secured to an ear 38 that projects-outwardly from the upper portion of wall 11 above the upper end of slot 36.

This spring normally retains the closure 32 at the upper end of its limit of movement, and to open the match box and for the purpose of obtaining a match, lip 34 is engaged with downward pressure, thereby moving the closure 32 downward against the resistance offered by spring 37 and when the upper portion of the opening 30 is uncovered, a match may be readily removed from the match box and-upon releasing the ear 34, the spring 36 willact to instantly return the closure to its normal position The outer face of one or both of the side walls 22 ofthe match box are roughened or coated with sand or emery, thereby pro viding roughened surfaces upon which the matches may be struck and lighted.

To insert a package of cigarettes inthe holder, the front edges of the side walls 10 are engaged and spring apart a suflicient distance to permit a package of cigarettes to be inserted between said side walls and behind the

12 and 13, and the resiliency of the metal of which the holder is formed, will cause the side walls-toreturn to their normal positions after the package has been thus inserted. After tearing off that portion of the wrapper of the cigarette package that is beneath the closure 18, such action being facilitated by the sharp edges 20, the holder may be placed and carried in the pocket and the struction, inexpensive of manufacture and very effective in performing the functions for which it is intended.

' An especially desirable feature of my invention isthe provision of means whereby a package of cigarettes maybe carried in the pocket without danger of crushing or breaking the cigarettes, and as said cigarettes are contained in the original wrapper, they will retain theirdesired moist condition, in other words, they will not dry out so quickly as if they were not protected by the box or container.

It will be understood that minor changes in the'size, form and construction of the various parts of my'improved cigarette package holder and match box, may be made and substituted for thoseherein shown and described without-departing from the spirit of my invention, the scope of which in the appended claims.

I claim as my invention:

1. In a device of the character described, a cigarette package holder formed from a single piece of sheet metal bent to form side Walls, a rear'wall and overlying top members,

match box that is relatively simple in conset forth i piece of sheet metal bent to form side and rear walls, flanges projecting inwardly from the walls and forming a part of the top of the connections between said overlying top members whereby the same may move past each other to permit the free edges of the side walls to move toward and away from each other, inwardly projecting flanges on the free edges of the side walls of said holder, andinwardly projecting flanges on the lower edges of side walls and the rear wall of said holder. a

2. In a device of the class described, a cigarette package holder formed from a single piece of sheet metal bent to form side and rear walls, overlying top members formed 7 integral with said side walls,'one of which top members is provided with a T-shaped slot, a T-shaped tongue on the other top member which engages in said T-shaped slot,

a closure hinged to the frontedge of one of said overlying top members, and the upper edges of the side walls adjacent to the ends of said closure being sharpened.

3.In a device of the class described, a-

cigarette package holder formed from a single front edges of said side walls, flanges projecting inwardly from the lower edges of the rear and side walls, overlying members projecting from the upper edges of the side walls and forming a part of the top of the container which overlying members are connected for sliding movement pasteach other and a closure hinged to the front edge of one of said overlying members'for closing'the remaining portion of the top of the container.

4- In a device of the class described, a cigarette package holder formed from a single piece of sheet metal, bent to form side and rear. walls, flanges projecting inwardly from the front edges of said side walls, flanges projecting inwardly from the lower edges of the rear and side walls, overlying members projecting from the upper edges of the side container, which overlying'members are connected for sliding movement past each other,

a closure hinged to the front edge of one of said overlying members for closing the remaining portion ofthe top of the container, 7 and the upper edges of the side walls in front of the overlying top members being sharpened to. form cutting edges.
