Description

J. HUGHES. MEAT-CUTTER. No.17"8,151 Patented myA 3o; la7-e.
WITNESSES VENTOR* Y awy@ l ALW/3%) ATTORN EYS N.PETLRS, PHOTOMTMDGRAPHER. WASHINGYU D C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN HUGHES, OF MANSFIELD, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN MEAT-CUTTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 178,151, dated May 30, 1876; application led March 25, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHNHUGHES, of Mansfield, in the county of Richland and State of Ohio, have invented a new and valuable lmprovement in Meat-Cutters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specication, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a transverse vertical section of my meatcutter, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
rIhis invention has relation to meat-cutters wherein the knives are secured to revolving cylinders arranged at the bottoms of hoppers.
The nature of my invention cons-ists in the manner of securing the knives into the periphery of the cylinder, so that they can be quickly removed when necessary; also,in combining with a hinged hopper a comb-plate and a supporting-guard 'for the comb-teeth, as will be understood from the following description.
In the annexed drawings, A designates the frame of the machine, and B the shaft of a cylinder, C, which shaft has its Ybearings in journal-boxes at the ends ot' the frame, and on it a belt-drum, a, is keyed. The periphery ofthe cylinder C has four4 grooves in it, which are at regular intervals apart, and which eX- tend from one end to the other of this cylinder, as shown. In these grooves knives are secured, the cutting-edges of which are the segments of a circle, so that they operate on the meat with a draw-cut. The Shanks of the` knives b are dovetailed, and fitted into the grooves in the cylinder at equal distances apart, and rigidly held by means of dovetail spacing-blocks c. These blocks are inserted into their grooves from the ends ot' the cylinder G, and are held in their places against endwise Vmovement by means of caps G G',
vwhich are removable. J designates a hopper, which is hinged at y to one side of the frame `A, and constructed with two inclined sides and two verticalsides. Kdesignates a combplate, which is rigidly but removably secured to one of the inclined sides of the hopper J, and which is so constructed that the knives pass between the teeth, and in doing so cut the meat. Beneath the inclined side of the hopper, which has secured to it the comb-plate K, is a guard, L, which supports the combteeth, and also prevents the escape of anything back ofthe hopper.
By throwing up the hopper, as shown byr dotted lines in Fig. l, access can be had to the cylinder C without detaching the hopper. By detaching the cylinder-caps G G', the spacing-blocks c and knives can be removed.
'lhe cylinder U may be made of wood, in which case the knives will be driven into it.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Ina meat-cutter, the cylinder C, having `dovetail grooves in it, in combination with removable knives b, spacing-blocks c, and removable caps G G', substantially as described.
2. The hinged or pivoted 4hopper J, having attached toit a removable comb-plate, K, in combination with the supporting-guard L and a rotary knife-cylinder, C, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The cylinder C, provided with dovetail grooves, in combination with the removable knives b, spacing-blocks c, removable caps G G', hopper J, removable comb-plate K, and
guard L, substantially as described, and for y the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN HUGHES. Witnesses:
S. LEMON GEDDEs, G. R. GRIFFITH.
