MACHINE FOR CUTTING WOOD INTO CHIPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 899,107, dated March 5, 1889.
Application filed May 28, 1888 gerinl No. 275,271 (No modelf' Patented in Germany March 24, 1887, No. 42,187.
To all whom it only concern:
Be it known that LOTTO Asnos WINTER, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident of lluxtehude, in the Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Cutting \Vood into Chips, (for which I have secured Letters Patent in Germany, No. 42,187 dated March 24, 1887,) of which the following is a specification.
My inventimi relates to that class of machines which are used for rasping or shaving wooden blocks to make paper-pulp, or for reducing wood to small chips for dyeing and tanning purposes; and the objects of my invention are, first, to afford means for producing chips of very regular form and size, and, secondly, to construct the slmving-druin in such a manner as to facilitate the rcplacein cut and adjustment of the knives. I attain these objects lrv the mechanism illustrated in the accompanyin drawings, in which- Figure l is a front elevation of the shavingdrum, one-half of which is a section to the line .r y of Fig. 2, which is a side view of the drum, and Fig. I} a detailed view in perspective oi a kn i to and a Pfillllifll'i liltllli for the reception of the some.
Similar let tors refer to si milar part-s throughout the several views.
The cutter head or drum is provided with a certain number of diagonal slots on its periphery, and each slot receives one knife or cutter, which occupies a corresponding position, all of said knives being at a uniform angle throughouttheir lengths. The periphery of the drum is provided with suitable solid rings or collars for supporting the knives and incrczising the stability of the drum, or it is composed of a number of correspondinglyformed stoves or compartments, f, Fig. 3, for the reception of theknives. These helicoidal stoves are provided with flanges c and (I, by means of which they are bolted to two polygonal disks or bottoms, A and B, the sides a a a a and I) Z) 11 if of which correspond with the number of staves j and knives 71 The knives are attached to the staves f by means of the cover-plates and bolts 2', and provided with slits 7i, which allow the knives to be withdrawn without removal of the coverplates and to be adjusted in such a position that the kni fe-edges form the surface of a cylinder coneentricall v to the axis of rotation of the drum. The direction of the heliooidal knife-edges is throughout the same, and the staves f, although fitting close together on one side, form such open canals that the chips of wood are compelled to leave the shavingdrun'i always on the same side at A.
To prevent the chips from falling into the inner space of the drum, the staves f on their back 1 and the cover-plates g are provided with corresponding notches, 7.2, for the reception of narrow plates in, which serve to fill out the remaining space between two adjacent staves carrying the knives.
Having now fully described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is- 1. In a wood-shavingdrum,the cutter head or drum having a series of diagonal slots in its periphery, the holicoidal stavcs, and the series of knives, suhstantially as set forth.
2. In a wood-shaving drum, the combination, with the cutter head or drum and the polygonal bottom pieces, A and 13,0? thehelicoidal stavesf and the knives 7:,suhstantially as set forth.
In testimon y that I claim the foregoing as my invention Ihave signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 3d day of April, 1888.
