Description
Nov. 11, 1930. c. B. MARGRAVE GOLF CLUB GRIP Filed Dec. 3. 1928 Patented Nov. 1l, 1930 UNITED i STATES PATENT OFFICE GOLF-CLUB GRIP' Application mea members, 192s. serial no. 323,344.
My invention is a golf club grip.
" Anobject of my invention is the construction of a grip for golf clubs which will have a certain resiliency and also allow the shaft of the club to have a slight rotatable action in regard tothe ends holding the grip.
A more detailed object of my invention is the construction of a grip utilizing a helically coiled spring with a tight coil'whieh is itl0 self wotmdgn the club in a helical manner,
the spring being slightly stretched and secured firmly to the shank of the club. Over this layer of coiled wire I wind first a layer of friction tape and then a layer of leather or other suitable material to be immediately gripped by the hand.
My invention lis illustrated in the accompanying drawings,.in which: i Figure 1 is a perspectivev view of a club having my'grip attached th reto;
Fig. 2 is a perspective vie partly broken away, showing the manner of constructing the grip. 4 f
Referring to the drawings,.the'shank of :5 the club is designated generally by the numeral 11 and on this there is an inner binding `12 formed of a spring. This spring is made of an elongated helically coiled wire-having a tight coil and this coiled wire is itself wound on the shank of the club at the handle portion; the coils being positioned close to ether.
One end of the spring wire is secure by a -rivet 13 to the shank and the other endl by a j riveti14 to the end of the shank.
A layer of friction tape 15 fis then wound 4 onthe' handle over the coiled spring, this-be- ';j-;f,ing wound into a tight binding and on ac- 'lf count of its stckiness' adheres* readily to the .wire pring An `outer layer.' of leather lor equiv entl material listhen woundonfthe friction tape, this being-'illustratedfas having a helical winding and is secured at one. end
the wire gives a certain 'softness to the gn as the individual coils may compress sli tl l? `when tightly gripped by the hand.
a golf ball is struck by the head of the club,
.it tends to twist the'shankvll and the coiled wire allows this slight twist to' the stem giving a resilient action as regards the gripping y the hands. As the outer part of the hand grip is held lirmly in the hands the coiled spring reacts to return the shank 11 to its 4normal position. While this relative twisting action of the shank l1 and the coil l2bi1 small, it is perceptible when striking' a a v Various changes may be made in the principle's of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof as set forth in the description, drawings and claims.
I claim: 4 Y
I1. In a device-as described, a.V shank of a club, ahelically coiled wire. spring 'wound on the said shank and secured thereto forming a hand grip. l
2. Ina device as described, a shank of a club, a helically coiled spring of small diameter wound on the shank in a helical winding with the adjacent windings contacting one with the other, and means to attach the winding to the shank thereby forming ahand grip.
3..-'In a device as described, a shank-for a club, a helically coiled wire spring wound in `a helical manner on the said shank and secured tlretlc, and asolt cfvering over the s rin t ere ',vi a an ip.
p4. Ign a degcl asngdescribedra shank of a club having a tightly A coiled helical spring wound in a helical manner' on the shank and secured thereto with adjacent windings in close contact, a binding of friction tape over the spring and a binding of soft flexible material over the friction tape, thereby formingna hand grip.
l testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification. f
