Devices or this invention comprise a handle having extending therefrom a flexible, resilient strip which is held against 3 separation fromthe handle. An element is mounted onthe handle for longitudinal movement relative thereto and a flexible strand extends between theele ment and the free extremity of the resilient strip. The shamans strip entend in relatively spaced relation so that whenthe elenieiit removes inwardly of the handle, thestrand will flex the strip and curl inwardly towards the handle. Additionally, the device is protide'd with retaining means extending between the strip and the strand for maintaining the strand against any substantial separation away from the strip during the curling motion of the extremity of the strip so that a relatively large loop is presented when the element is moved inwardly of the handle.
The drawings show two forms of retaining means and strip construction. ,In the form of Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, handle I has thumb loop 2.
Slidably mounted on the handle is element 3.
Afiixed to the under side of the handle and extending beyond its end is a flexible strip comprising a sheath 1, as of tubular fabric. Aflixed along this sheath 'l beyond the end of the handle is a series of truncated, wedge-shaped blocks 5 as of wood, terminating with an end piece 6. The end piece 6 is provided with a hook i. The sheath l contains a resilient metal strip 8 which is anchored with the sheath 4 by screw 9 to end piece 6. Strand It is anchored at its inner end to element 3 and passes through a portion of the handle as shown at H and through holes l2 in the blocks 5 with its outer end anchored on the end piece 6.

In this form, the end piece and hook may be an integral portion of the flexible resilient strip Ba which may be of spring steel having a resilient slightly curved shape as shown. In this form the strip 8a may be rigidly affixed to the handle as by rivets [5, whereas the coil spring M and strand Ifla may be aifixed to the outer extremity of the strip 8a by passing through an aperture it in an offset suitable sizes and shapes, without departing from the spirit of this invention as set forth in the appended claims.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A device of the character described comprising a handle, an element mounted on said handle for longitudinal movement relative thereto, a flexible resilient strip extending beyond one end or" said handle and held against separation therefrom, a flexible strand anchored at one of its ends to said element and at its other end to said strip, at a point remote from said handle, said strand extending in laterally spaced relation to said strip, and retaining means extending between said strip and said strand for maintaining said strand and strip against any substantial relative separation long substantially the entire length of said strand as said element is moved longitudinally relative to said handle in a direction away from said remote point to flex said strip, whereby the extremity of said strip curls inwardly towards said handle to permit an article, such as a rope, detachably secured to said extremity after it has been curled around an object by such element movement, to be looped around said article as said element is released to uncurl said strip with simultaneous withdrawal of the device away from said object.
2. A device of the character described comprising a handle, an element mounted on said handle 1 said handle, for curling said strip inwardly tosaid strip for connecting a piece of rope thereto for passage around an article extending through the loop formed by the strip in its curled position.
3. A stringing device comprising a handle, a flexible sheath secured to said handle and extending beyond one end thereof, a series of wedgeshaped blocks secured in a row along one side of the extending portion of said sheath, a resilient member carried in said sheath for relative longitudinal sliding movement therein but anchored at its outer end to said sheath, an element slidably mounted on said handle and a flexible strand anchored at one of its ends to said element and extending through said series of blocks, and anchored at its other end adjacent the outer end of said sheath, for flexing said sheath into a curled position upon movement of said slidable element inwardly of said handle, and a rope retaining means mounted adjacent the outer end of said sheath for connecting a piece of rope thereto for passage around an article extending through the loop formed by the sheath in its curled position.
4. A device of the character described comprising a handle, an element mounted on said handle for longitudinal movement relative thereto, a. flexible resilient strip extending beyond one end: of said handle and held against separation there-- from, a flexible strand anchored at its inner endl to said element and at its outer end to said stripat a point remote from said handle, said strand extending in laterally spaced relation to said strip along a substantial portion of its length, and retaining means extending between said strip and said strand for maintaining said strip and strand against any substantial relative separation along substantially the entire length of said strand as said element is moved longitudinally relative to said handle in a direction away from said remote point to flex said strip, said retaining means comprising a helically wound wire anchored at one end to said handle and at its other end to said strip adjacent its free extremity whereby the extremity of said strip curls inwardly towards said handle to permit an article, such as rope, detachably secured to said extremity after it has been curled around an object by such element movement, to be looped around said article as said element is released to uncurl said strip with simultaneous withdrawal of the device away from said object.
5. A device of the character claimed in claim 1 wherein the flexible strip is provided at its extremity with an oifset portion and a hook, both integral with said strip.
