Patented Get. 14, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT oFFicE' CARL W. CEDERBERG AND NILSVG. LARSON, OF ATTLELBOEO, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGN- ORS TO LARSON TOOL.&; STAMPING COMPANY, OF ATTLEBORO, MASSACHUSETTS, A
CORPORATION 0F MASSACHUSETTS FRAME This invention relates to frames more particularly of the adjustable type that may be readily fitted to number plates, name plates, pictures and the like, of diflierent sizesgand the object of this invention is to provide a frame of this character having end and sideV bars preferably of channel shape to lit over the edge of the plate and to also provide cor-A ner members arranged to adjustablyengage the iiramebars, means being also provided for connecting togetner these corner members to bind the frame bars `in position about the edge of the plate. Y
A further object of the invention is to provide yieldable connecting members which act upon the corner members to yieldably connect them together to bind and secure the trame bars together in position about the plate embraced therein.
1With these and other objects'in view, the invention consists of Vcertain novel Vfeatures tconstruction, as will be more fully `described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
ln the accompanyingl drawings: Y
Fig. i is a front view showing our improved construction of adjustable frame in position about the margin of a number plate.
Fig. 2 is a rear view showing a binding member and two pairs of'linls connecting the four corner members ot the frame together.
Fig. 3 `shows one of the corner members as formed from sheet stock before being folded into shape.
Fig. l is a perspective view showing the blank as folded intoshape forming the frame bar engaging portions andaconnecting ear member. J
5 is a perspective view'showing a short length of one of the.` channel-shaped frame bars.
Fig. 6 is a sectional elevation showing a corner member as engaging side and end frame bars. y
Fig. 7 is a sectional elevation illustrating a rivet as formed from the vstock of one of the parts for pivotally connecting one of the other Jframe parts thereto. Y
Fig. 8 illustra-tes modifications showing three additional .vays of connecting the corner members together.
It is found in the practical construction and means for attaching together parts oi frames more particularly adapted to be applied to number plates,`name platesy and the like, or advantage to torni theframe parts so that the same may be readily adjusted in size to tit different sizes of plates and to be able to quickly assemble the frame parts on its plate and readily connect and bind all of the parts together about the plate without the use of fastening bolts; andthe following is a de tailed description of the present embodiment of our invention and showing one arrange- .ment of parts by which these advantageous results may be accomplished:
1With reference to the drawings, l0, designatesthe side bars and 11 the end bars of the frame which are preferably Yformed in channel shape to different desired lengths and are best illustrated in Fig. 5, and l2 designates the corner members w iich are prefen ably blanked out of sheet stoc-ln'lirst into the form illustrated in Fig. 3 and then folded into the form illustrated in Fig'. l having a channel-shaped arm 13 to fit over and slid- Vably engagethe end of the side frame bar;
and a second channel-shaped arm 14 arranged to similarly engage the end frame bar l1. Also, this corner member is provided with an ear portion l5 which is i'olded across its back to extend at an angle of substantially 450 to the side arms. his ear member isl pierced as at 1G for the purpose presently described.
In. order to connect together these four Adifferent `corner members, we have herein shown `one simple construction which is that of providing two pairs ot link members 17, each pair being connectedtogether one end preferably by a pivot 18 and the opposite end of each link 17 is preferably pivotally connected at 19 to the ear 15 or" its corner member. ln some instances, connection may be made by aseparate rivet and in some instances we may' raise t-he stock from one of the parts to form an integral rivet 2O from the stock, as best illustrated in Fig. 7. In some instances, this integral rivet may Cil be formed from one of the links While in other instances it may be formed on the ear ot the corner member, by which construction it will be seen that the parts may be quickly and inexpensively assembled together.
The connected ends ot' the link members may then be joined together in any suitable way and we have herein shown a wire spring member 2l with a hook 2:2 termed on cach end ot the wire, which may be readily connected to the joined ends of each pair ot links, whereby by simply connecting the ends of this spring to the links a tension is applied simultaneously to all :tour corner members causing them to bind their side bars and end bars firmly about the plate. Also in some instances instead of using the i'iat link 17, I may employ wire connect-ors arranged n the manner of any ot those shown in l* S, it desired, but any other suitable connector member ma7 be employed for this purpose, the primary thought being that the corner members are caused to bind the side and end iframe members about t-he plate without the use ot attaching bolts.
in assembling the trame parts, it is only necessary to select from the several standard sizes the lengths ot t-he side and end trame bars required, set them on the edges of the plate to be framed, position the corner members over the ends of the bars, and connect these corners with the flexibleconnector.
The foregoing description is directed solely towards the construction illustrated, but We desire it to be understood that We reserve tae privilege ot resorting to all the mechanical changes to which the device is susceptible, the invention being defined and limited only by the terms of the appended claims.
lVe claim:
l. i-in adjustable 'trame comprising side and end trame bars oi channel shape, corner members siidably engaging said frame bars, centrally disposed spring means, and connecting means pivotally secured to cach corner member and to said centrally disposed spring means.
f2. in adjustable frame comprising side and end trame bars et channel shape, corner members having channel portions slidably receiving the end portions ot said side and nd trame bars` and means pivotally secured o said corne'.l members and exerting a substantially radial resilient binding action on the corner members to retain the frame members in set position.
An adjustable trame comprising side and end trame bars et' channel shape, corner members having channel portions slidably receiving the end portions ot said side and end trame bars, links pivotally secured to said corner members.. and resilient means acting upon said links to bind the corner members andthe frame bars in o aeratine Josition.

An adjustable frame comprising side and end trame bars of channel shape, corner members shaped to provide channel portions to receive the adjacent ends of side and end frame bars, each having an attaching member pivotally mounted thereon, and centrally disposed spring means connected to all of the attaching members of the trame thru which all ot the corner members are bound together to retain the frame bars in working posit-ion.
n n adjustable trame comprising side and end trame bars of channel shape, corner members each folded from sheet stock to provide channel portions shaped to receive the adjacent ends ot' side and end frame bars, each corner member also having an attaching member pivotally mounted thereon, and centrally disposed spring means eXertin a binding action on all of said corner members to retain the trame bars in set position.
G. An adjustable frame comprising side and end frame bars ot channel shape, corner members adjustably engaging said trame bars, two pairs of link members each pair being connected at one end and each link of each pair being connected to one of said corner members, and means for connecting together each pair ot links to bind the trame bars and corner members in position.
An adjustable frame comprising side and end trame bars ot channel shape, corner members adjustably engaging said frame bars, two pairs of link members, each pair being pivotally connected together at one end and each link ot each pair being pivotally connected to one oi said corner members, and means-for connecting together each pair of links to bind the 'trame bars and corner members together.
8. An adjustable iframe comprising side and end trame bars of channel shape, corner members adjustably engaging said iranrly bars, two pairs ot link members each pair being connected together at one end and each link ot each pair being connected to one of said corners, and a yielding tension member connecting together each pair of links to bind the corners and i ame bars in operating position. i
t). An adjustable trame comprising side and end tramc bars of channel shape, corner members having channel portions shaped to receive the adjacent ends ot' side and end iframe bars, links pivotally secured to corner members, and resilient means acting through said links to connect together said pairs of corner members to bind the trame bars in position.
ln testimony whereof we aiiiX our signatures.
