50M I in ATTORN EY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
JoHN B; noHEEE, or PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED TABLES AND lRONING-BOARDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 177,427, dated May 16, 1876; application filed March 4, 1876. c
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN B. ROHRER, of Philadelphia, in the county of .Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Tables and Ironing-Boards; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a bottom View of my combined table and ironing-board, showing the latter extended. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section thereof, showing the board and its attachments under the table. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are details. Fig. dis a longitudinal vertical section of the same, showing the skirt-board extended and supported bythe braces; and Fig. 7 is an end view of the same, showing the said board thrust back and the ends of the stays or braces resting on the slotted end rail of the table.
This invention has relation to improvements in combined ironing tables and boards; and it consists, mainly, in combining withan ordidinary table a sliding ironing-board, arranged in ways under the table, and capable of being thrust out of sight under the same, whereby the table is made to present a neat and tinished appearance. It also consists in combining with a table a sliding board provided with braces, a bracket for holding sad-irons, and a shirt-bosom board, the whole being adapted to be thrust out of sight under the table along with the skirt-board, to which they are pivoted, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawings, the letter A designates an ordinary table, provided, in the usual manner, with end boards a a and side boards I) b. This table may be provided with leaves B, which will be supported, when extended, by means of vibrating arms a, hinged to the side boards I), and held against sagging by means of a leg, d. 0 represents a skirtboard of the customary tapering shape, which passes through a slot, 8, in end board a of the table, and is guided in ways 0, formed upon the inner side of the sides b thereof. This board slides freely in its ways e, and is prevented from becoming casually disengaged therefrom,
"Fig. 3. In order to prevent this skirt-board from sagging I use braces E, pivoted to the edges of the same, and provided upon their free ends with notches i, which, when engagedover pins j near the lower end of legs D, will effectually accomplish the desired result. F
represents a sleeve or bosom board, which is pivoted to the under side of skirt-board O in such a manner as to be swung out at right angles thereto when required for use, or to be thrust back under the same when the skirtboard only is needed; and G indicates a preferably metallic sad-iron-holder plate, which is pivoted to the under side of the skirt-board, and is capable of being swung out at right angles thereto in position for receiving the sad-irons. When the skirt-board and its attachments are no longer needed, the two latter will be swung under the former, with their lengths in the length of the board, and the braces E having been detached from pins j, the said board may be thrust back in ways 0, out of sight, under the table, which is thus made to present the ordinary appearance.
In practice I shall supply my table with a shelf, H, having an edge flange, it, upon which sad-irons will be placed out of sight.
When the lower ends of the supportingbraces are disengaged from pins they depend loosely from the skirt-board, and when the latter is thrust inward the said braces will be carried alongtherewith into slots, being swung up into the same plane with the said board, and will be held against downward vibration by the resting of their free ends in the slot.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is i 1. In combination with a table having side rails b, with inside ways 0, and an end rail, a,
provided with horizontal slot 8, a sliding board,
with the length of the board, and to. be thrust; back therewith through slot 8, out of sight,
behind side rails b of the table, substantially as specified.
2. In combination with a table having legs D, constructed-with a shoulder, h, the end;
wise-sliding board O, having-the end cleatf,"
provided with the projecting arms g, substantially asspeciiied. I I
3. In'combinatiou with a table having endrail a, provided with horizontal slot s,anda. sliding board, 0, extensible through the said 7 slot, the vibrating braces E, ivotedto the.
edge of the said board, adapted tou engage h pins-j, 0 own" upward: nto hesame filane with board 0, to be received endi wise into the said slot, and to be slid under s the table along with the said board, substanially sp fied, a
In testimony that- I'claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence 1 of twocw n ss s.
JOH'N BrROHBER.
