UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
YVILSON NORRISS, OF MOUNT STERLING, OHIO.
COMBINED SETTEE, lRONlNG-BOARD, AND CLOTHES-RACK.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 404,978, dated June 11, 1889.
Application filed February 6,1889. Serial No. 298,823. (No model.) I
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILsoN NOERISS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Sterling, in the county of Madison and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Settee, .Ironing- Board, and Clothes-Rack, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a combined settee, ironing-board, and clothes-rack; and it consists in a certain novel construction and combination of devices described hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings, and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement arranged as a settee. Fig. 2 is a similar view thereof, with the ironing-board and clothes-rack in the operative position. Fig. 3 is a partial front view in the latter position, partly in section, to show the arrangement of the brace for the press-board. Fig. 4 is a rear view, partly in section, in the folded position. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the loose sleeve and the slotted arm which is connected thereto.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates the settee, the seat of which is formed by the lid of the clothes-chest B, and the side arms 0 O of the settee form the supports for the ironing-board D.
The ironing-board is provided on its under side with the slotted plates E, which slide on T-heads e on the swinging or loose leaves of the hinges F, the stationary leaves of the said hinges being affixed to the rear ends of the side arms 0 O. This arrangement of hinges and slotted plates enables the ironingboard to be either arranged 'on the side arm or supports 0 O in a horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 2, or arranged in an approximately vertical position in rear of the said side arms or supports. When in the latter position, theironing-board forms the back of the settee, and is provided at its lower edge with a socket, which receives a vertical pin (1 The depending flanges d d at the ends of the ironing-board fit down 011 the outer sides of the arms or supports, and one of the said flanges is provided at its front edge with a spring-bolt G, which engages a socket g in the side of the adjacent side arm or support when the ironing-board is in its horizontal position.
The foldingracks H H are provided at their inner ends withvertical bars h, which are mounted at their lower ends in sockets h h in the base I, and loose sleeves K K are fitted on the said vertical bars at intermediate points, and are provided with the swinging slotted arms K K. These arms are pivoted to the said sleeves, and the slots is therein slide on studs k 76 on the ends of the ironing-board, when the latter is moved from its vertical to its horizontal position. When the ironing-board is in its horizontal position, the slotted arms are horizontal and engage at their lower edges in clips 10 k on the ends of the board. The racks, when folded at side of the ironing-board, are held in position by the hook L on the free end of the rack H, which engages a keeper Z on the edge of the ironing-board.
A press-board M is hinged to one end of the ironing-board and is provided with a swinging support or leg N, the tapered lower end of which fits in a pocket n on the side of the adjacent side arm or support when the pressboard is in its operative position. This support or leg is provided near its free end with a revoluble catch 0, which is adapted to engage a socket O in the under side of the press-board when the latter is in its folded position, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3 and in full lines in Fig. 4;.
From the above description it will be seen that the improved ironing-board, when in its folded position, forms a convenient settee, and when extended in its operative position it is provided with a press-board and racks to receive the ironed clothes, while the chest beneath the table is designed to contain the clothes before they are ironed.
Having thus described the invention, I claim 1. The combination, with a settee having side arms 0 O and back D, and studs k on said back, of the racks H H, arranged in rear of said settee, the sleeves K, journaled upon said racks, and the slotted arms K, pivoted to said sleeves, their slots engaging said studs, substantially as described.
IOC
2. The settee having a base I and side arms or supports 0, the hinges F on said supports, the ironing-board D, provided with slotted plates E, sliding on said hinges, and studs 70 011 said board D, in combination with the racks H H, journaled at their lower ends in said base in rear of the settee, the sleeves K, journaled upon said racks, and the slotted arms K, pivoted to said sleeves, their slots engaging said studs, substantially as described.
3. The settee havinga base I and side arms or supports 0, the hinges F on said supports, the ironing-board D, provided with slotted plates E, sliding on said hinges, as specified, the rearwardly-opening clips k at the lower ends of the sides of said board, and the studs 7a in said sides remote from said clip,in con1- bination with the racks H II, journaled at their lower ends in said base in rear of the scttee, the sleeves K, journaled upon said racks, and the arms K, pivoted at one end to said sleeves and having longitudinal slots 75 engaging said studs 7c, the bodies of said arms K engaging said clips 70 when the ironingboard is raised, substantially as described.
4. The settee provided with supports C, the ironing-board D, hinged thereto and adapted to form the back of said settee, and the pressboard M, pivoted to the end of said ironingboard and adapted to be folded behind it, said press-board having a chainfered socket O in its lower face, in combination with the leg N, hinged at its upper end to said pressboard, and the catch 0, pivoted transversely through the body of said leg and having a hooked end adapted to engage said socket, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto ai'iixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILSON NORRISS.
