Y the cabinet proper is open at two opposite sides and the trays or supports are so mounted that they can be readily withdrawn from either one of these opposite sides of the, cabinet. Thus, one operator may take a position at one side of the cabinet and another operator at the opposite side of the cabinet, and both will have free access to the records and may work without interruption simultaneously upon the records in the diierent trays' o r supports of the cabinet. While what is now considered the preferred form of this invention is illustrated, it is obvious that other sides of the cabinet may be opened or the operators disposed in different positions with respect to the cabinet without departing from the principle or spirit of this invention.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a cabinet which may be of any suitable construction, the cabinet shown having end walls B and C, atop D, and being provided with suitable partitions EA onV which the trays or record matter supports are adapted to be moved. In the preferred form shown, this cabinet is open at the opposite sides F and Gr. The cabinet is provided with a plurality of record-matter supporting members or trays which are mounted in the cabinet so that they may be withdrawn or partially withdrawn from either of the open sides F or G, of the cabinet and in such manner that the record or index matter on the supports or trays will be properly presented to the. operator in the withdrawn positions j of these supporting members. The supporting members or trays may be of any suitablek form. In the embodiment'of the invention shown, there are provided aplurality'of trays 10 which have record supporting bodies or portions 11, side flanges 12, preferably forming channels at the sides of the trays, fronts 13, and hinged or pivoted tail pieces 1a. According to the invention, means are provided for mounting these supports or trays in the cabinet so that when withdrawn from either of the opposite sides F or G of the cabinet, the supporting devices or trays will be presented to the operator with the front ends extending. out of the cabinet.- rIhe record or index matter, as usual, is arranged transversely in the supports or trays between the sides 12 so as to be readily legible or workable from side to side Vthereof when the operator is positioned at the front ends of the trays, this results in the index or record matter being presented to the operator in positions most favorable for his work, upon withdrawal of the trays. With such object in view, in tne embodiment shown, the supporting members or trays are disposed in the cabinet with their opposite side edges or flanges 1Q. adjacent to and substantially parallel with the opposite open sides F and G respectively of the cabinet so that they may be swung in horizontal planes out of the cabinet, the pivots being adjacent the rear ends of the supporting members or trays. In this manner each tray 10 may be withdrawn from the cabinet with its front 13 extending outwardly from either side F or G, so that the records thereon may be viewed and read from side to side from the front of the tray. In the particular form shown, the tail pieces 14C (Fig. 2) are nrovided with bearing parts formed by openings or apertures as at 16 in the tail pieces of the `trays. There is preferably provided a pair of these bearing parts for each tray disposed adjacent opposite sides of the tray, and pivot means are provided whereby, when the tray or support is swung outwardly from oneside of the cabinet it will pivot on one of these bearing parts, and when swung outwardly from the other side of the cabinet it will pivot on the opposite bearing part. For this purpose, in the form shown, there is provided a pair of pivot pins or members designated respectively 17 and 18 (Figs. 2, 8 and Ll). The openings in the tail pieces of the supports or trays are preferably circular in form and the pivot pins 17 and 18 are arranged so that when the trays are in an inoperative position in the cabinet, they will both extendl through the apertures 16 with their axes coincident with the axes of said apertures, see Fig. 2. rlhe cross sectional shape of the pivot pins is elongate as shown, the longest dimension being normally arranged substantially parallel with th-e open sides of the cabinet. rlfhe two longer faces of each pin are curved concentrically on arcs, the center of which is on the axis of the other pin, while the shorter sides are curved to form arcs of a circle coinciding with the apertures 16. rlhe apertures 16 of the tail pieces connect with slots 16L which extend to `ping such t therear or free-edgesof the tail pieces7 said slots being each curved on an are the center of which also is the aXis of the apertures 16 at the opposite side of the tray, and are so positioned that when .the trays are vin Athe cabinet, they will be in alinemert or register with the Vpivot pins. The present invention includes means for limiting the eX- tent'to which the "trays or supports may swing downwardly relativelyV to l' the tail pieces or to the cabinet, thereby insuring that the trays or supports, when withdrawn, are at' all times in proper and uniform posit-ions to be uf'orledupon. Thus, as shown in Figs. 6 and 9, when a tray is swung out of the cabinet, pivoting on one ofthe pivot pins 17 or 18, the rib or flange 33 on the partition E beneath the tray engages in the transverse recess 34 in the tail piece 14 of the tray, and at the same time the side edge of the tail piece contacts with the side wall B of the cabinet. lThis ensures that the tail pieces willbe held in proper positions. The trays and tail pieces may be wholly withdrawn from the cabinet by rotating the retaining pivot pin through ninety degrees by a mechanism to be described, and pulling the'trays iorwarid after they are in the projecting positions described. ln such forward movement, the small ribs 34 v which forni the transverse depression 34 may beV sprung over the partition flanges by a slight pull, permitting the tail pieces to es cape from the cabinet. lli/lien it is not desired to wholly withdraw the tail pieces, the weight of the tray ensures that the tail pieces remain in position withv their grooves 34 engaging the partition flanges 33.
In order t0 lock the trays in the' cabinet, suitable means may be provided for preventing the pivot pins 17 an-d 18 troni sliding out of the openings or slots 16a in the tail pieces 14 of the trays. This being done, until released, there can be no pivotal movement of the tray. In the form shown, this is accomplished by providing means for moving the pivot pins v17 and 18 to and from positions where their reduced portions may enter theY elongated slots 16a in the tail pieces. ln this construction the pivot pins are preferably provided with actuating levers or throw arms 35 (Figs. 13 and 14) whereby they may be turned, and as shown in Fig. 5, when the pivot pins are turned through an angle of 90 more or less, the long dimensions of the pivotpins are opposed to the elongated slots in the tail pieces and cannot pass through. The throw arms may be housed in any suitable place, as tor example, the recesses 36 (Fig. 13) in the top of the cabinet in which they are arranged so that their free ends extend to an accessible position outside the cabinet, from which place they may be readily actuated. Suitable means are also provided or locking these parts in closed positions. ln the form shown 'for this purpose, there is provided a lock 37\(Figs. 3 and 14 which may be of usual type having a spindle 38 which is provided with a pair of cams 39. In locked position the cams project in the path oi movement of arm 40 on the lover and when the arm is positioned between the cams itis there held against movement. In this position the long dimensions of the pivot pinsk block the slots in the tail pieces. To release the trays, to permit them to be swung out of the cabinet, the lock 37 is actuated to turn the spindle 38, the lever 35 may then be thrown to open position thereby turning the pivot pins 17, 18 so that their short dimensions register with the slots 16a in the tail pieces 14, whereupon the trays may be pulled out.
.Means oi suitable sort are also preferably provided for releasably maintaining the trays in alined position in the cabinet so that when not in use they will occupy such position that they will be prevented from accidentally swinging outwardly and will always vbe in position to be grasped by an operator when it is desired to use them. rlhe trays are preferably provided, at opposite sides, adjacent their front ends, with handles or pulls a, and the means tor releasably maintaining the trays as stated are conveniently located so as to be actuated by the oper- Ator when grasping one oi the pulls 40L to withdraw a tray. As shown in Figs. 10 and 1l, the trays are provided at opposite sides with resilient spring lingers or members 41, inner ends or which are secured to the body portions 10, and the outer lree ends of which extend through apertures 42 in the side walls 12 oi" the trays to positions beneath the pulls or handles 40a. These lingers normally entend as shown in Fig. 11, and each linger has a depending, curve-d lug 44.
lvll/'hen a tray is in its inoperative position in the cabinet, the lugs 44 at opposite sides thereof will engage the opposite i'ianges 33 oi the partition on which the tray rests, and prevent accidental movements oi: the tray out of either side ol" the cabinet. When, however, it is desired to withdraw a tray, the operator grasps a pull 40a and presses upwardly against the freer end of the adjacent finger piece 4l, thereby diengaging its lug 44 "from the flange 33. rlhe tray may now be withdrawn. lt is obvious that this action may talre place at either side of a tray, the opposite finger moving inwardly away from its ccmpanion flange 33. Any other suitable device may be provided for the purposestated.
Tl/Vhile the foregoing description relates to a cabinet having opposite open sides and having trays therein movable to operative positions out oi' either of these open sides, the invention is not necessarily limited to such construction, as the invention in its broadest sense discloses the combination of a cabinet, a horizontal tray arranged therein with its sides parallel to an open side of the cabinet, and means for pivotally connecting said side so as to swing horizontally to an outward position and be then inclined downwardly so that the record thereon may be viewed or worked upon. rlhereicre, ir" desired, the cabinet could be constructed having only one open side, and with the slides arranged and movable in and out of tl is one open side, as stated, without departing from the spirit of this invention.
