IMPROVEMENT IN FENCUE-POSTS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 177,399, dated May 16, 1876; application filed April 5, 1876.

To all whom it may concern: 1

Be it known that I, HORA'IIO N. HOUGH TON, of Halifax, in the countyof Windham, State of Vermont, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Metallic Fence-Posts, of which the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is an isometricalperspectiveview.

My invention relates principally to that class of metallic posts which are employed in the erection of wire fences, and consists in a novel construction and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed, by which a simpler, cheaper, and more efl'ective device of this character is produced than is now in ordinary use.

The nature and operation of my invention will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters from the following description:

In the drawing, A represents the base or sill, which is provided at either end with a cross-bar or foot, B, designed to be buried or anchored in the ground when the post is in use. The-body of the post consists of a vertically-arranged stout metallic rod or wire, (J, secured at itslower end to the base, and bent to form the loops or eyes D E F. Attached at F to the top of the body 0 there are two sheets or braces, G G, composed of wires or wire cords, and respectively connected to the base A by the bracerods H H. A cross-brace, consisting of the metallic cord or wire a, connects the cords or wires G G to the body 0, near its center or at the loop D.

In the use of my improvement the post is anchored or inserted in the ground at the line was, the wires or wire cords I J K composing the rails or body of the fence being firmly attached to the post at the loops D E F, which act to sustain them in position, and prevent all undue vertical and lateral movements of the same.

It will be obvious that the base A and feet B B may be formed of wood or any other suitable material; also, that the rods H H may be dispensed with, the wire cords G G being connected directly to the base, and that the brace a may be omitted, if desired, without departing from the spirit of my invention. It will also be understood that the wires I J K are to be attached to the eyes F E D by means of short auxiliary wires or cords suitable for the purpose, or by taking a turn or hitch of the wires through the loops or around the body 0 at the point where the loops are located.

Having thus explained my invention, what I claim is The improved fence-post described, consisting of the base A, feet B B, rods H H, Wires G G, and body 0, provided with the loops F E D, constructed and arranged to operate in combination with the wires I J K, substanstantially as and for the purpose set forth and specified.
