FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 771,957, dated October 11, 1904.
Application fi e May 20, 1904. Serial No. 208,927. (No model.)
To (ZZZ whom it may concern:
so as to resist the tension upon the line wiresor strands, the bracing Ineansbeingof such arrangement as to obviate encroachment upon adjacent territory.
In accordance with this invention a postis located along the prescribed line of fence a short distance from the terminal post to be braced, and a timber firmly connects the lower ends of the terminal and stay posts below the surface of the ground, and its end portions, which project beyond said posts, receive -stayplates upon which the earth is tamped, a diagonal brace connecting the lower end of the supplemental post with the terminal post near the ground-line, all as will appear more fully hereinafter.
The invention consists, essentially, of the novel features and details of construction clearly set forth in the subjoined claim and illustrated in the drawings hereto attached, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a fence embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the terminal and supplemental posts having the fence-wires attached there;
to and braced in accordancewith this invention.
ence-numeral 2. These posts 1 and 2 may be arranged at the end of a line of fencing or adjacent to an openingtherein, the purpose being to brace post 1 against the tension upon line-wires 8, secured thereto and to the remaining fence-posts. Supplemental post 2 is arranged a short distance from post 1about siX feet, more or lessboth posts having their lower portions planted in the ground the usual depth and connected at their lower ends by means of timber 3, which is preferably mortised into a side of the posts and has its end portions extended beyond same a short distance to receive short plates or boards 4, arranged transversely thereof and resting thereon. These plates or boards 4 serve to prevent vertical displacement of timber 3 by having the earth packed thereon. Brace 5 is interposed diagonally between the lower end portions of posts 1 and 2 with its lower end bearing against the foot of post 2 and its upper end bearing against and secured to post 1 about at a point corresponding with the ground-line. An inward pull upon the upper end of terminal post 1 is resisted by brace 5 and timber 3. Hence the strain upon the line wires or strands 8 cannot effect displacement of terminal post 1. Brace 5and timber 3 a in the plane of the fence, hence are well adapted to resist strain of the fence-wires upon post 1. The braces indicated by the dotted lines 6 and 7 of Fig. 1 are temporary stays to fix the position of posts 1 and 2 when applying parts 3 and 5 and are removed after said parts 3 and 5 are properly positioned. After the posts 1 and 2 have been properly set and braced, the earth is tamped about parts 3, L, and 5, the fence-wires being attached to the posts along the line of inclosure in the usual way.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- In a fence, the combination of a terminal post, a supplemental post located a short distance from the terminal post, both posts having their lower end portions planted in the ground, a longitudinal timber firmly attached to the lower ends of the terminal and supplemental posts and having its end portions extended, transverse plates arranged upon the projecting ends of the longitudinal timber, verse plates being arranged wholly below the and a brace in the plane of the posts and timground, substantially as set forth. IO ber, having its lower end resting against the In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature in foot of the supplemental post in the angle presence of two witnesses.
formed between said post and longitudinal JOHN WEIRICK. [L. s.] timber, and having its upper end connected Witnesses:
to the terminal post at or near the ground ISAAC CAHILL,
line, said brace, longitudinal timber and trans- ANsoN WIOKI-IAM.
