Description
' 'UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIcE.
WILLIAM B. MACK, oF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN INJECTORS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 177,313, dated May 9, 1876; application iled September 15, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. MACK, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Injectors, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of my invention'consists in the construction and arrangement of an injector for locomotives, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring` to the annexed drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and which represents a longitudinal section of my improved injector.
A represents the tapering combining-cone, with steam-plug E and tapering or conical nozzle E', constructed in the usual manner, as described in former patents granted to me, and forming an annular water-passage, e, between the cone and nozzle.A cone tapers in about the proportion of six to two in sixteen down to the line aa. From that point extends van auxiliary combiningcone,B, down to the line c. This auxiliary combining-cone tapers from a to c at the rate of about one and one-'half inch to the foot, and the upper end, a, thereof is larger in diameter than theend A of the nozzle E, while the lower end, c, is very much smaller than said nozzle-point. The point of the nozzle extends more than two-thirds the distance down the combining-cone A. Fis the usual overow-chaniber, with the delivery-tube passing through it, said' tube being divided into two parts, C C', by a passage, c', leading into the overflow-chamber. This delivery-tube C C is on a gradual taper from c to fl of about one-fourth inch to the foot. Below the line d is the auxiliary delivery-tube D', also tapering, but inverted, at about one inc-h to the foot.
Water enters at H around the steam-plug E, passes through the passage e around the nozzle E', and at the point A thereof cornes in contact with the steam issuing from said nozzle. than the entrance, at a, of the auxiliary combining-cone B, the steam will enter the same, as it were, in a solid body surrounded by wa- The combining- As the point of the nozzle is smaller l ter; and as the steam and water pass through the tapering auxiliary' cone they will become gradually land gently incorporated and mixed together. "'lhelower end of this auxiliary cone and entrance of the delivery-tube, at c, being very much smaller than the nozzlethe force is very much increased at this point, which force is still more increased by the taper of said delivery-tube up to the point d, where it is the greatest. The auxiliary delivery-tube D allows the water to 'gradually accommodate itself to the pipe through which it enters the boiler.
By this construction of injector a muc-h greater range can be given while Working, as
by closing and opening the watervalve, and without operating the steam, I can diminish the How of the Water into a boiler fully sixty to sixty-tive per cent. of its maximum capacity without in any way adjusting either of the cones or tubes forming the injector; and the injector, as constructed, can deliver its maximum and minimumamount equally well with any amount-of steam-pressure.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isy 1. In an injector having the tapering combining-cone A and tapering delivery-tube C C', the auxiliary tapering combining-cone B, constructed substantially as described, and iuterposed between the cone A and tube C, for the purposes herein Set forth.
2..'The combination, in an injector,.of the combining-cone A, auxiliary combining-cone B, delivery-tube C C', and auxiliary deliverytube D, all constructed substantially as described, and for the purposes herein set forth'.
3. The combination ot` the steam-nozzle E', combining-cone A, and auxiliary combiningconeB, constructed, as described, with the point of the nozzle smaller than the adjacent end of the auxiliary cone, and larger than the other end thereof, for the purposes herein set forth. y
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM B. MACK.
