SPECIFICATION farming part of Letters Patent No. 326,758, dated September 22, 1885. Application led June 17, 1885. (Model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN LOFTUS, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Injectors; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to 'the accompanying drawings, which form a part ol" this specification, and in which- Figure l is a vertical sectional View of my improved injector. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the discharge-tube with its overflow suction-nozzle. Fig. 3 is a view of the combining-tube; and Fig. Li is a view of the steam tube and nozzle.

My invention has relation to injectors for steam-boilers; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of the same, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In steam-injectors it is very desirable to have the injector consisting ot' parts which may be easily separated for the purpose of cleaning them, and which, again, may be easily fitted together; and it is likewise desirable to have the parts of the injector so constructed that they may be easily bored and reamed when manufactured, which objects I seek to attain by the construction which I shall now proceed to describe, and in which the main portion of the injector' has its branches placed opposite to each other and of the same diameter, while the several nozzles and tubes are removably inserted into the branches of the said inain portion.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates the body or chamber of the injector, and the said body is cross-shaped, having two diametrically opposite horizontal branches, B and C, and an upwardly-projecting overflow suction-tube, D, and a downwardly-projecting water or suction branch, E. The horizontal branch B has connected to it by any suitable coupling a pipe, F, having a downwardly-projecting branch, G, which is provided with a cock or globe-valve, H, while the pipe is secured in the boiler-shell and opens into the boiler. The steam-pipe I is connected to the horizontal branch C, and the suction or feed pipe J, which carries the water from a suitable reservoir or water-pipe, is secured to the lower branch, E. The interior of thesteain branch C is bored and reained to receive a snugly-fitting plug, K, the outer end of which is formed with a ange, L, which bears against the outer end of the branch, and the inner end of the plug is turned oft to form a conical nozzle, M, through the apex of which the axial conical bore N of the plug opens. A snuglytting plug, O, lits into the branch leading into the boiler, having a flange, P, which bears against the outer end of the branch, and the inner portion, Q, of this plug is turned oft to form a reduced portion, which projects into the center ofthe body of the injector, and has a space surrounding it between its sides and the inner sides of the body of the injector. The outer portion ot' the plug has an inwardly-tapering narrow bore, R, the inner end of which opens through a conical nozzle, S, which projects into the wider bore of the reduced portion Q, and the bore of the said nozzle is conical, with its apex pointing outward toward the apex of the outer tapering bore, R, the said nozzle and its bore forming the discharge-tube. A tapering nozzle, T, projects from the upper side of the reduced portion Q, registering with the overflow branch of the body of the injector, and the upper end of the said branch is formed with a Valve scat, U, upon which plays a valve, V, having its upwardly-projecting stein X playing in an aperture, Y, in the top of a joint or overflow-chamber, Z, secured upon the Lipper end of the overflow branch and having a laterally-extending overflow-pipe, A. A small plug, B, having a flange, C', at its outer' end, tits in the inner end of the reduced portion Q, and forms the combining-tube, having a conical nozzle, D', at its inner end, and having an inwardly-tapering bore, E', directly opposite to the nozzle of the steam-plug, the nozzle D being directly opposite the wide end of the bore of the discharge-tube.
When the injector is to be operated, steam is let in through the steam-pipe, and the cock or valve upon the feed-pipe opening into the IOO boiler is opened. The steam entering throngh the steam-nozzle will create a vacuum in the body or chamber of the injector, which will cause the water to rise in the suction-pipe and enter the chamber, from which it will pass out through the overflow, raising the valve in the saine. Vhen, now, the water is flowing sufficiently freely up through the suction-pipe, the steam will commence to force the Water through the combining-tube and the dischargetube into the feed-pipe, where'it will escape through the cock or globe valve, and when this cock or valve is closed the steam will force the water into the boiler, the said cock or valve serving as au indicator to show when the injector commences to operate.
It will be seen that all the parts of this injector' are easily removed or inserted and that it may easily Vbe cleaned or repairedand have its several parts renewed. Its parts have all regular shapes and straight lines, making the parts easily manufactured and fitted, there being no curved or bent portions to which access for tools is difficult.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- In an injector, the combination of the injector-body having the four diametrieally-opposite branches, the overflow-chamber fitting 3c upon the upper branch, the overflow-valve playing upon the upper end of the upper b1 anch, within the overflow-chamber, the suction-pipe fitting upon the lower branch, the steam-plug fitting in one horizontal branch, having a flange at its outer end bearing against the'outer end of the said branch, and having a tapering steam-nozzle at its inner end, a feedpipe entering the boiler and secured to the other horizontal branch, and provided With a T-branch having a cock or globe-valve, a dischargeplug fitting in. the discharge branchand having a flange bearing against the en d of the said branch, a reduced portion formed with an upwardly-pointing overiiow suctionnozzle, and a discharge-tube opening in the interior of the said reduced portion, and a combining tube or plug fitting in the end of the reduced portion of the discharge-plug, and having a nozzle pointing into the said portion, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
