My invention has relation to injectors for steam-boilers; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of an injector having for its object, in common with others, the feeding of the water into the boiler from an annular column of water in an unbroken jet, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the shell of the injector.
B indicates the steam-chamber in the upper end of the injector, having on one side an opening, B, for the admission of steam into the injector, the steam being conducted to said opening B through suitable pipes from the dome or other steam part of the boiler. Water is admitted into the injector through the opening 0, made in the side of the shell a little below the steam-inlet B, and on any convenient side of the shell, and the dischargeopening D is placed under, but at some distance below, the steam-opening, B. Through the cap A, which, is provided with a stuffingbox, A, passes a vertical steam-tube, E, open at either end, and provided at a point above its center with apertures E, through which the steam obtains access into the the said tube.
F represents the lifting tube or nozzle, (shown in detail in Fig. 6 of the drawings,) which is screwed down intoa seat in the lower side of the steam-chamber B, immediately below the steam-opening B, and which is provided near its upper end with a series of apertures, F, extending completely around it, for the purpose hereinafter described.
The water-forcing tube of my improved injector is composed of two nozzles, H and I, screwed one above the other in the shell A.
J represents the-chamber in the lower part of the shell A, within which works the threeway cock K. (Shown in detail in Fig. 5.) The hollow conical plug or cockK is provided with three openings, K K L, at substantially the same height, the smaller opening K registering with an opening, D, in the lower side of the discharge-tube D, the opening K regis'tering with an opening, M, leading into the overflow-pipe M, which extends from the side of the water-overflow or chamber J into the shell A at a point immediately above the nozzle 1, forming a part of the forcing-tube, while the opening L in the lower side of the cock communicates with an opening, L, in the lower side of the space J, which serves as a combined hot and cold water overflow.
0 indicates the valve-stem, having uponits upper end a thumb-piece by which its adjustment is effected. The lower end of the valve stem is turned to adapt it to fit upon the valveseat E in the steam'tube E.
P represents a, lever or pitman, one end of which is secured to the valve-stem O and the other to a wrist-pin, Q, on the handle of the cock K.
The manner in which my improved injector is operated is as follows: The opening B is put in communication with the steam-space of a boiler, the opening D with the water-space of the boiler, and the opening 0 with the source of water-supply. The handle of the cock K is then turned up into the position shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, thereby opening ports K, K and L and overflow M, the pitman l? opcrating the valve-stem 0 so as to close the Valve E in the nozzle of stem E. Steam is then admitted into the steam-chamber B, and forms an annular steam'j et by being forced down through the annular space formed by the nozzles of tubes F and E, and a larger annular water-space immediately below, formed by nozzle H and the lower part of the tube E.
The velocity of the steam-jet passing through the annular water-space exhausts the air in the pipes leading to the water-supply, and the water is drawn into the water-chamber 0, when it is forced down through the space between the nozzles H and E, through the tubes I and M, through the hollow plug K, and out at the overflow-opening L, into which the port L opens. (See Fig. 4.) The handle of cock K is then turned down, as shown in Fig. 1,thereby closing all the apertures leading into the space J and elevating the valve-stem 0, so as to lift its lower end off of the valve-seat E, thereby opening the apertures E and allowing the steam to enter the steam-tube E, so as to form a steam core inside of the annular water-jet. The condensation of the steam concentrates the water into the conical space in the upper end of the tube I,when it is forced down through the nozzle I, by the combined steam-jets formed by the nozzlesF and E, into the water-space leading to the boiler, in an unbroken annular jet. Vhenasufficient amount of water has been fed into the boiler,the cock controlling the, steam-supply pipe is closed, and the handle of the cock K is turned up iiito the position shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, thereby drawing down the valve-stem 0, so as to close the apertures E in the sides of the steam-tube E and open all the apertures leading into the chamber J. The surplus water in the injector will then pass into thehollow cock K and out through the overflow-opening L, previously referred to. lhe steamtube E is provided upon its upper end with a stufiing-box, 0, through which the valvestem passes, and is also provided with a screwthread upon that part of it which passes through the cap A, and has its lower end made slightly conical, so that the said tube may be raised or lowered to increase the space for the annular steanrjet for high lift, or decrease it for low lift and less water. It can also be raised or lowered for the purpose of removing scale or dirt. The lower nozzle, I, forming a part of the forcing-tube proper, has astuflingbox, R, upon either end, andis provided with a nut upon its center to adapt it to be raised or lowered for the purpose of setting the tube or nozzle for high or low steam, or hot or cold water, setting it down for high steam and hot water and up for low steam and cold water.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. In an injector of substantially the described construction, the combination of the shell A, provided with a forcing-tube, the lower section of which, I, is adapted to be raised or lowered, a lifting tube or nozzle, F, provided with apertures F, a hollow steamtube, E, having a lower tapering end,and provided with apertures E, and an exterior screwthread upon its central part to adapt it to be raised or lowered, and a valve-stem,O, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
2. In an injector of substantially the described construction, the combination of the shell A, provided with a combined lifting and forcing tube, the lower section of which, I, is adapted to be raised or lowered, alifting tube or nozzle, F, provided with apertures F, a
hollow steam-tube, E, having a lower taper-' ing end, and provided with apertures E, and an exterior screw-thread upon its central part to adapt it to be raised or lowered, a valvestem, 0, overflow-pipe M, chamber J, threeway cock K, hot and cold water overflow L, and lever or connecting-rod P, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially in the manner and for the purpose shown and described.
