IMPROVEMENT IN INJECTORS.
specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 74,578, dated March 7, 1876; application ined september 22, 1875.
To all whom it may conce-m Be it known that I, EDWARD B. BYNEAR, of Upper Dublin, Montgomery county, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Injectors, of Awhich the following is a specification:
'lhe objects ofmy invention are, rst, to provide an injector for steam-boilers with a simple and eicient device for lifting a volume of Water at the commencement of the operation, and, second, to so construct the injector that the admission of both steam and Water can be controlled by one operating spindle. These objects I attain in the manner which I will now proceed to describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section of my improved injector; Fig. 2, the same with the workin g parts in a different position Fig. 3, a transverse vertical section on the line l 2, Fig. l 5 and Fig. 4, a transverse vertical section on the line 3 4, Fig. l.v
A is the casing of the injector, having the usual steam-inlet B, water-inlet D, and overflow chamber E, all ot' which communicate with the central opening, of varying diameter, which extends from end to end of said casing. This openly communicates at one end With a pipe leading to the boiler, and is closed at the opposite end by a tapering plug, a, attached to or forming part ot' a spindle, b, threaded at its inner end, the said plug a being retained in position by means of a nut, d, 'so as to prevent any but a rotary movement of the spindle b. The threaded end of this spindle is adapted to a threaded opening in a hollow plug, F,which tits snugly, but so as to slide freely, in the central opening of the casing A, and is caused to move longitudi- -nally by operating the said spindle b, a lug, j',
at the end of the plug working in a slot in the casing A, and serving to prevent the turning of the said plug F. To the interior of the'plug F, a short distance from the outer end of the' same, i's adapted a screw-plug, e, carrying a tapering nozzle, lr, which extends to or beyond the end of the plug F, for a purpose described hereafter. V
The nozzle G communicates at its enlarged end with a chamber, i, formed in the end of the plug F, and bounded at one end bythe end of the screw-spindle b, and at the other by the screw-plug e, and this chamber also communicates through perforations m with the steaminlet B of the injector.
The plug Fis reduced in diameter at 7c so as to form an annular val ve-face, which is adapted to an annular valve-seat, l, formed in the casin'g A, and immediately adjacent to this valve lc the plug F is provided withl openings, n, which, under the circumstances described hereafter, establish a communication between the steam-inlet B and the central opening of the plug.
The inner ends of the plug F is made tapering, and the end of the opening p of the injector adjacent to the end of the plug is flared outward at a corresponding angle, the parts being so arranged that when the valve k is 'in contact with its seat there shall be a slight annular space, fr, between the end of the plug and the iiared portion of the opening p.
The operation Vof the above-described injector is as follows:
The parts being in the position shown in Fig. 1, steam is admitted at the inlet B and passes through the perforations m and into the nozzle G, from the end of which it issues i-n a inejet, which passes through the opening p, and, owing to the check-valve in the exitpipe, escapes at the overilow-chamber E. This jet produces'a partial 'vacuum in the water-chamber D, owing to thecommunication between the same 'and the opening p through the annular space fr, and the water rising in the chamber D passes through this space and is discharged from the overflow-chamber.
The plug F is now moved rearward by operating the spindle b, thus exposing the openings n and permitting an increased volume of steam to lenter the hollow plug F, the same movement also widening the annular space m (as s hown in Fig. 2) and permitting the entrance of an increased volume of Water, the two combining in the opening p and passing thence through the exit-opening into the pipe communicating with the boiler.
It will be seen that by the above-described arrangement the admission ol both steam and Water is under the control of the spindle b, by
operating which the volume of both can be increased or diminished at pleasure.
