W. T. MESSING-ER.
INJECTORS FOR STEAM BOILERS. No.175,Z94. Patented March 28,1876.
. taken through the steam-induct.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM MESSINGER, OF SOMERVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN INJECTORS FOR STEAM-BOILERS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,294, dated March 28, 1876; application filed March 10, 1876.
of Somerville, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Im provementin Injectors for Steam- Boilers; and do hereby declare thesame to be'fully described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which.-
Figure l is a-front elevation, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal section ot'` an injector with my improvement. Fig. 3 is a transverse section Fig. 4 is an external view of the inner nozzle with its grooved valve and guides. Fig. 5 is a transverse section of said nozzle taken through its forward guide, while Fig. 6 is an end view of the said nozzle.
,In my improvement, the inner steam-nozzle is movable longitudinally, and serves as a valve to close the outer and surrounding nozzle.
In Fig. 2 of the drawings the internal and external steam-nozzles arey shown at O and D. Theinner nozzle D has'fixedon it concentrically a cylindrical valve,'A,-`of a'diameter to t the cylindrical part of the bore ot' thevalve-case B, from which the nozzle C extends.
Between the. valve-case B and thesteaminduct D is an arched chamber. E, which at top opens into the induct and at bottominto the valve-case. -Within`ithe chamber E is a gear, F, that engages with the cylindrical valve A, which has in its periphery a series of grooves, a a' a., that 'encompass it, at equal distances apart, in order to receive the teeth 'of the gear and operate therewith, as do the A interstices between the teeth of one gear with the teeth of another. The gear F is mounted on aspindle, G, which extends through a stufng-box, H, and is provided with a handle,
H', all being as represented.
Each of the guides a' b of the inner nozzle,
arranged as shown, approximates in form to that of a triangular prism, its purpose being to guide the nozzle D rectilinearly and concentrically within the case B and nozzle (l, and to allow steam to pass freely. to the nozzles, as occasion may require. l,
By taking hold ofthe handle H and turning it so as to revolve the spindle one way, the nozzle D may be advanced within the nozzle C, so as to close it for the passage of steam through it. When the nozzle G is so closed, the valve A will have been advanced far enoughfor the steam to pass into the rear end of the nozzle D, and thence entirely through such nozzle.
On turning the handle so as to cause the nozzle D and its valve A to be moved .backward far enough, the steam may be cutoff from passing into the nozzle D,and be made to iiow only through, and be discharged by, the nozzle G. The tube or nozzle D is formed conicalortapering at and near its front end, as shown, in order for it to constitute a valve to more or less close the terminus of the nozzle C.
From the above it will be seen that, by a proper adjustment of the valve lA land nozzle D, the steam may at one time be caused to flow through both nozzles, or it maybe entirely shut o' from either of them and caused to pass through the other.
I cla-im- Inthe injector for steam-boilers, the combination of the stationary nozzle U and the movable nozzle D and the valve A thereof,
applied to the case B and steam-induct 1)', and provided with operative mechanism,'all being' substantially and to operate as specied.
WM. T. MESSINGER.
