PATENT. OFFICE.
ANDROSS ROGERS AND CHRISTOPHER WINTERS, OF FREEPORT, ILLINOIS,
ASSIGNORS OF ONE-HALF THEIR RIGHT TO WILLIAM SWANZEY, OF
SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN F EE D-COOKERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 177,284, dated May 9, 1876; application filed March 27, 1876.
To all whom it may cancel-m.
Be it known that we, ANDROSS Romans and CHRISTOPHER WINTER s,'of Freeport, in the county of Stephenson, and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed-Cookers; and do here by declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a feedcooker, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. v
In the annexed drawing, Figure l is a -ver.- tical section of our feed-cooker. Fig. 2 is a section through the upper partot' the draftpipe.
A represents the shell of acooker', made of any suitable dimensions, and provided with a grate, 13, elevated above its bottom. C is the smoke-pipe, and D is the draft-pipe. The upper part of the draft-pipe D extends horizontally through the side of the smoke-pipe c, and has a damper, a, as shown. Within the smoke-pipe c the draft-pipe turns downward, and extends through and below the center of the grate B, as shown, thus forming a center draft, having the fire all around the draft-pipe, thereby heating the air as itpasses through more effectually than either the outside or inside draft when it is attached to the shell of the cooker.
Another advantage of this arrangement of the draft-pipe is, that the'tire is thereby caused to strike the whole of the inside of the shell, thereby causing the Water to come to a boiling heat evenly all around the cooker, which is not the case where the draft is attached to the side of the cooker.
The draft- 'npe, running through and below the grate, distributes the air more efi'ectually through the fire as it passes up into the cooker.
We are fully aware that agricultural boilers having an air-supplying pipe or flue extending down to one side of the grateare not new but in such inventions as known to us the airsupply pipe is not extended to the center of the grate; hence the air is not equally distributed under the grate.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to'secure by Letters Patent, is a The combination of the cooker A, having grate B, and the air-supplying pipe D, passing 'down through the center of the cooker, and
through and below the center of the grate,
substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands.
ANDROSS ROGERS. CHRISTOPHER WINTERS.
