My invention relates to improvements in methods of manufacturing screen guards and similar devices, and the object of the invention is to devise a simple, cheap and rapid means of manufacturing screens of this type, and it consists essentially of the steps forming my method hereinafter described.
The drawing illustrates the various steps by which my method is carried out in which,
Fig. 1 represents a perspective view of a completed guard screen.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the flange bar out of which the frame is formed.
Fig. 3 is a view of a screen portion showing the edge upset vertically to lit the flange bar illustrated in Figure 2.
Fig. 4 is a similar view to Figure 2 showing the vertical flange of the flange bar bent inward at an incline ready for applying to the screen body.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view through the flange bar showing it applied to the screen body in its initial position.
Fig. 6 is a similar view to Figure 5 showing the flange bar in the position its assumes when it is applied to the screen body in the final position.
Fig. 7 is a plan view showing the method of jointing the angles of the frame.
Figs. 8 and 9 are similar views to Figures 5 and 6 and showing the final step clinching the screen body within the frame.
Fig. 10 is a front elevation of the parts shown in Figure 9. Fig. 11 is an alternative form of Figure 7.
In the drawing like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
In order to carry out my method the screen body 2 is upset upwardly as indicated at 2", the portion 2* extending at right angles to the body so as to fit the interior angle of the bar 1. The flange bars 1 of the form shown in Figure 2 have the vertical flanges 1 of the bar 1 greater in proportion to the horizontal flange 1. The upper portion of the vertical flange 1 of the flange bar 1 is then bent inwardly to anangular position as indicated at 3 in Figure 4. lVhen each of the bars 1 forming the sides of the frame have been bent into this form they are cutv into lengths and then applied to each of the upset edges 2* of the screen body 2 by hooking the portion 3 over the portion 2* into the position shown in Figure 5 and then swinging the bar inwardly so that the portion 1*, see Figure 5. is carried to a vertical position as indicated in Figure.
6, against the upset edge 2* of the frame 2, the horizontal flange 1 of the flange bar then resting against the bottomof the screen body.
When each of the flange bar sections formas in Figure 11. These overlapping portions may be then riveted togetherby' a con necting rivet 4. After this has been done the ends of the flange portions 3 are manually pinched inwardly by a suitable tool against the inner face of the upset edges 2* of the screen body so as to retain the bars 1- in po sition around the screen bOC v. The ends of the bars are then welded or otherwise suitably connected together and the body of the flange portion 3 between the pinched in portions 4* arepressed inwardly so as to grip the upwardly extending edge portions 2* of the screen body as illustrated in Figures 8, 9 and 10 thereby completing the screen.
By this method the screen is formed very rapidly with a minimum expenditure of time and labour and therefore greatly cheapening the cost of manufacture. I i
What I claim as my invention is 1. A method of manufacturing seree guards and the like consisting of tip-turning the edges of the screen body to an angular position, bending a flange of a flanged bar inwardly on a mediallongitudinal line to wardly against the vertical portion to grip the upturned screen edgestherebetween.
2. A method of manufacturing screen guards and the like consisting of up-turning the screen body to an angular position, bending the Vertical flange of a flangedbar inwardly on a medial longitudinal line to form 7 an acute angle, cutting the flanged bar into sections to form the sides of the screen frame, hooking such angularly bent portions over the up-turned edges of the screen body, successively swinging the bars inwardly so that the Vertical and horizontal flanges fit against the vertical and horizontal portions of the screen body, pinching the ends of the inclined portions of each flanged bar flange inwardly as it is brought into position against the screen ,body, securing the ends of the bars together, and forcing the inclined portions of the flange of the flanged bar sections inwardly against the vertical portion of the flange to grip the up-turned edges therebetween.
3. A method of manufacturing screen guards and the like consisting of tip-turning an edge of a screen body to an angular position,. taking abar having flanges extending at an angle one to the other, bending one of the flanges of the flanged bar inwardly on a medial line to form an acute angle, zupplying the flanged bar to a screen body by hooking such angularly bent portion over the upturned edge of the body, swinging the bar inwardly against the Lip-turned edge and beneath the body, and forcing the angularlyr in-bent portion of the flanged bar inwardly towards the body of the flange to grip the upturned edge therebetween.
4. A method of manufacturing screen guards and the like consisting of tip-turning the edges of the screen body to an angular point intermediate between its normal and final positions and applying the bar to one side of the up-turned portion of the screen so that such up-turned portion extends be tween the bent portions of thebar, and finallyforcing the bent portion of the bar from its lntermediate positions towards the other or unbent portion of the bar and against the other side of the up-turned portion of the 7 position, bending bars on their medial longitudinal line and applying the bars to the sides of the up-turned portions of the screen so that such up-turned portions extend between the bent portions of the bars, securing the adjacent ends of the bars together and forcing the bent portions of the bars towards the other side of the up-turned portions of the screen to grip such up-turned portions between the two opposing portions of the bar.
