Description
VE. H STEEL. CHIMNEY FLASHING. FILED APR. 22, i922,
fem H, TEEL il@ A 'l EARL H. STEEL, 0F INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
CHIIJINEY FLASHING.
Application filed April 22,
To @ZZ 'whom it 72mg/ com/ern Be it known that l, EARL il. zen oi the United Statesa dianapolis, in the bounty oi' citate of indiana, have invented a ne v and useful Chimney Flashing, oi which Athe Yfoilowing is a speciication.
My invention relates to cnimney iiashinfgjs and has `for one jects the provision of a imitar: M member having` means which surround the chimney and are interposed between the root' and the chimney and in addition thereto flashing membersl which are secured to the chimney and have outwardly flared flanges arranged to lie parallel with the root and .fit over the root covering', a: to prevent chimney iires.
In the drawing:
Fig. l is a` perspective view of a chimney and roof showing' my flashing unit in position; and
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the flashing` unit.
In the embodiment illustrated l provide a pair of side members l 4and 2 which are arranged on each longitudinal side oi' the chimney 3 and lie parallel therewith at the point where the chimney passes through the opening in the roof boards. rihese side members are arranged to be interposed between the edges of the roo'l' boards l and the chimney in the chimney opening' in the roei? boards. Connected to the side members l. and 2 are end members 5 and 6 which are preferably secured to the ends of the side members by means of pivots 7 erttendingr through inturned flanges 8 on each of the end members and through the side members so that a certain angular displacement of the side members with respect to the end members may be had without changing the plane of the end member.
The flashing strips proper are arranged to be secured to the side and end members. The end flashing strips 9 and l() are preferably riveted or otherwise secured to integral. upwardly extending iingers l1 on the end members 5 and 6 and are adapted to have their upper and lower edges turned at right angles so that the upper edae may be inserted between the courses of brick to hold the fiashings in position and the lower edge extended out underneath the roof covering. The side flashing members 12 preferably consist of a series of rectangular sheets animprovements iu ts ob- 1922. Serial No. 556,023.
gul-arly disposed on the side members lA and 2 with their cors; s overlapping and secured 'to the side members by means o rivets i3. The side flashing` members L.' are so disposed on the side members l. and 2 that with the side membersin position on the chimney the upper oi: the flashing members will be parallel with the brick courses and these edges may be inturned at right angles to fit between the brick course, the lower edges of the lashi members being turned outwardly right angles to lie parallel with the reeling boards as shown in Fie; l. By overlapping; the side flashing' members as illustrated a eontinuous flashing strip. when their lower edges are bent mitwardly as vat 14. is provided along` the sides oi the chimney.
claim as my invention:
l.. A chimney flashing unit comprising a pair of side members arranged to lie parallel with the sides ot the chimney.` and a` plurality oi iiashinef strip members secured to said side members having portions overlapping and with their upper edges disposed at an anale relative to the top of the side members so that when the unit is placed in position the top edges oic the flashing members will be parallel with the brick courses of the chimney.
2. A chimney fiashinpf unit comprising a pair oi' side members and end members pivotally connected thereto. said members surrounding the chimney and lying parallel therewith. end Flashing' strips secured to the end members and side flashing; members comprising plinalitv of rectannjular members secured on the side members and having their ends overlapped. the upper edges of said members being disposed at such an angle to the upper edges of the side members that when the unit is placed in position the upper edges of the flashing members will be parallel with the brick courses of the chimney., and said lower edges may be outwardlv Flared to Form n substantially continuous flashingT strip lying under the roei covering; and parallel with the rooi".
3. A. chimney flashing unit comprising a collar surrounding? the chimney between the root boards and the chimney. and dashing: strips associated with said collar and -arranired at their upper edges to lie the chimney and haveV theirlower edges turned outwardly to lie parallel with the rome boards..`
members having a portion lying parallel with the Chimloej,7 and a lower portion ezitendng at right angles thereto and lying,` parallel With the roof.
n Witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand at Indianapolis, Indiana, this 17th day of April, A. D. one thousand nine huir dred and twenty two.
EARL H. STEEL.
