IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR BLOCKING HATS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 177, [69, dated May 9, 1876 application'filed April 5, 1876.

To all whom it may concern .Be it known that I, HOMER V. SNOW, of Franklin, of the county of Norfolk andState of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Machine for Blocking Hats; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which Figure l is a top view, Fig. 2 a transverse section, and Fig. 3 a longitudinal section, of it. Fig. MS a top view of its rotary spider.

My invention consists, first, in the combination of a rotary spider, its supporter, a gasburner, and a hat-block; second, in the combination of a scalloped rim-cap with the hatblock; third, in the hat-block provided with tenons, in combination with the rotary spider, provided with slots in its arms to receive such tenons; fourth, in the combination of the standard or spider-supporter, its gas-burner, the spider, hat-block, and the scalloped rimcap, all arranged and applied as hereinafter specified and represented.

In the drawings, A denotes the spider-sup porter; which is a standard or post, provided with a cylindrical journal, or, and a shoulder,

12, at the foot thereof, such journal and shoulder being' 'to sustain the spider and allow of its being revolved. Within the standard, which is tubular, is a gas-burner, B, for heating. by means'of gas, the hat block or mold O. The spider D is provided with a series of radial arms, 0 c c 0, each of which is provided with a mortise or slot, d, arranged in it as shown, such being to receive one of a series of tenons or studs, 6 e e e, projecting down from the block or mold G. The slots and studs serve to keep the mold or block in place on the spider, and to enable the spider andvmold to be simultaneously revolved, as occasion may require in blocking a hat. The mold or block is hollow,

as shown, and furnished with an edge gagegroove, f, on the upper surface of its rim porsaid periphery corresponding in its curve to that of the gage-groove. This presser or cap E, having two handles or knobs, h h, is placed upon the rim of the hat after such hat may have been Stretched in a damp state upon the mold, the recesses or scallops enabling a work-' man to see the hat-rim near its outer edge, and to draw it out to the gage-groove, in order that the rim, after removal from the block, may have an even curve on its outer edge.

From the above it will be seen that the groove f is intended as a gage to determine the correct form of the outer edge of the'hat rimor brim.

To the gas-burner there should be a proper conduit for the conveyance of gas to it, in order that such gas may, when inflamed on the burner, be employed to heat the block.

I claim as my invention as follows, viz:

- I 1. The combination of the rotary spider D,

its supporter A, the gas-burner B, and the hat block or mold 0, all arranged substantially as set forth.

2. The combination of the scalloped orrecessed rim-cap E, as described, with the hat block or mold O.

3. The hat-block (3, provided with the studs or tenons e, in combination with the rotary spider D,provided with the slots at in its arms 0, to receive such tenons, all being arranged as set forth. 4. The combination of the standard A, gasburner B, rotary spider D, hat block or mold O, and the rim-cap E, scalloped or recessed at and around its periphery, as set forth.
