Description

T. J. MELVIN CLOSURE DEVICE July 29, 1930.
Filed Aug. 1928 Inventor Z Mes/Wk Patented July '29, 193i) PATE NT OFFICE THOMAS J. MELVIN, OF BRADFORD, PENNSYLVANIA cnosuim DEVICE Application filed August 4', 1928. Serial 1%. 297,451.
The Object of my said invention is the provision of a closure device that is, at once, simple; easily operated,- easily cleaned, and efj Figure 4, the tube A is formed with a body ficlent. To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in the improvement as herein- 4 after described and definitely claimed.
In the drawingwherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of a conventional paste tube equipped with my improved closure device.
Figure 2 is a sectional view through the cl sure device at right angles to Figure 1.
'- igure 3 is a plan view of the closure device, and r r v Figure 4 is a section through the discharge end of a tube of modified construction.
First having reference to Figures 1, 2 and 3, A designates generally a conventional collapsible paste tube with an-exteriorly thread- 'ed neck B having an opening C through wliiicli the paste within the tube may be expee.
One embodiment of my invention, Figures 1, 2 and 3, includes a. body 5 which is exterior- .ly globular and has a threaded socket 6 for receiving the threaded neck B of the tube A, while extending through said body 5 at-the centpr of the socket is a paste discharge openlng Adjacent the lower edge of the body 5 the H within which are pivotally mounted pins 2-9 carried by the ends of a. U-shaped bail 10, the center of said bail being provided with a circular enlargement to provide a cap'll to the under sidebf which is attached a cork or rubber pad 12 for tight engagement over the outer end of the opening 7 in the body 5 when the bail isswung into position above the body 5 as disclosed in said Figures 1, 2 and 3. However, paste from the tube the bail 10 may be swung said body when it. is desired to project the over at right angles to the position disclosed, V whereupon the cap opening 7 is'uncovered.
In the form of-the invention disclosed in B having a globular exterior and through which is a aste passage 0. The outer side of is of rounded formation or globular, as stated, while pivotally arranged at opposite points in the body at the inner end thereof are pins 9--9 carried by the legs of a U-shaped bail 10' that-is formed centrally with an enlarged portion to provide a rounded cap 11 upon the inner face of which is applied a cork or rubber pad 12' for tight engagement with the end of the passage 0' through the body B when the bail is swung into position over the end of the body as disclosed. o
In each embodiment of my invention the bail is provided with outwardly bowed portions separated by intervening spaces from the globular exterior of the body and adapted to assure the pad being tightly held over the orifice in the body and also adapted to permit of the bail being swung to position the pad 7 on and off the body.-
By virtue of the surface of the body outwardly beyond the-radially pro ecting- .portion being of globular form, the said surface is susceptible of being ex editiously and easily wiped and kept per ectly clean;.and it will also be appreciated that because of the globular form of said surface and the outwardly bowed portion of the bail, the collection of substance on the said surface is not so likely to interfere in any measure with free swinging of the bail.
Having-thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is A closure device consisting essentially of a body having a central-aperture through the same and also having integral diametrically opposite radially projecting portions in which are radially disposed journal bearno ings and further having its exterior from said projecting portions to said a erture globular in form, a bail having ad acent its ends inwardly directed journals disposed in said journal bearings and also having an enlarged central portion and outwardly bowed portions at opposite sides of said central portion, separated by intervening spaces from the surface of the body and a compressible pad carried at the inner side of said enlarged portion and movable with the bail to and from a position over the central portion of the body to close the aperture therein.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature. I
I THOMAS J. MELVIN.
