C. I. SAUNDERS.
ANDIRONS. v
No. 177,017. Patlented May 2,1876

PATENT OFFICE.
GROGKETTI. SAUNDERS, GOGGINSVILLE, VIRGINIA.
IMPROVEMENT m ANDIRONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent'No. 177,017, dated May 2, 1876; application filed April 7, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CROGKETT I. SAUN- DERS, of Gogginsville, in the county of F ranklin and State ot'Virginia, haveinven-ted certain new and useful Improvements, in Andirons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 is a section taken after the line .12 w in Fig; 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
This invention relates to andirons for holdin g pieces of wood in the fire-place while being consumed and it consists, first, in constructing them in such a manner that there is no danger of their being upset, as is the case where the oldfashioned andirons (consisting of two pieces) are used and, secondly, in makin g the several pieces of which they are constructed adjustable, so that they may be packed up in a small space, as hereinafter more fully shown and described.
in the drawing, A is the front of my improved andirons. This consists ofa metallic bar, curved so as to form the two legs B B, having, ata suitable distance from the base, square slot-s or perforations c c. O O are metallic bars slightly curved in the middle, as shown in Fig. 2, and bent at the rear end, so as to form the feet D D. At the front end these pieces are rabbeted off, so as to fit into the.
slots 0 c, and the ends of them are screwthreaded, as shown. The ends of the pieces 0 O'being inserted into slots 0 a, they are secured by means of nuts E E.
It is obvious that instead of 7 this construction the ends of pieces 0 (3 may simply be screW-th readed, and then inserted into the corresponding serew-threads in legs B B but I prefer the first construction, as there is then no danger of the legs turning and the apparatus being upset while in use.
By the use of my improved andirons, (which will be easily understood from the foregoing description,) the front piece A preventing-the wood which rests upon the curved horizontal pieces 0 G from falling 011 in front, thetrouble and annoyance incident to the use of the oldfashioned andirons are completely avoided they cannot possibly upset, and they further admit of the fire-place being cleaned out without removing them. The construction is simple and cheap, and, occupying but little space, they may be easily stored away when not in use.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patentof the United States- The combination of the front piece A, curved to form legs B B, with the adjustable curved pieces 0 O, substantially as and for thepurpose shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have aiiixed my signature in pres, ence of two witnesses.
GROOKETT INGLES SAUNDERS.
