IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE FENCES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,990, dated May 2, 1876 application filed October 4, 1875.

To all whom may-concern:

Be it known that 1, JOHN M. OVERPEcK, of Greenbush, in the county of Preble and in the State of Ohio, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Braces for Portable Fences; and do hereby declare that the following is a,full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improvement on the portable fence, as patented to me November 24, 1S74,No.157,214; and it consists in the construction of the same, as hereinafter more fully set forth.

In the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, the figure is a perspective, and

I A A represent the panels of the fence, which may either be constructed as described in a former patent to me, or in any of the well- .known and usual ways of making panels for portable fences. B B represent the braces, which are connected together near their centers by means of a crossbar, O. This crossbar is notched on its upper side to receive and help sustain the boards of the panels Near the upper ends of the braces are formed, in their outer edges, notches to receive a metal link or loop. D D represent the metal loops. The braces are placed in the position seen in the figure, with their upper inside edges beveled,

so as to rest against the vertical end bars of the panels. The loop or link D is then slipped over the two braces, and caught in the notches made to receive it. A wedge, e, is then driven in between the two vertical end rails until the parts are separated suificiently to tighten the loop firmly around the braces and said end rails or bars.

.The fence may be easily taken down by removing the wedges, and then slipping off the' links, which bind the fence and the braces together.

In the fence previously patented to me a U- shaped link was passed around two adjoinin g posts, over the ends of which was slipped an eye-bar, and a connection made by pins passing through the link. The present invention is intended to simplify the aforementioned fence.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination of the two fence sections or panels A A, the inclined braces B B, connected by the notched bars 0, the twisted wire loop D, and the wedge e inserted between the posts of the fence-sections, as set forth.
