Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,954, dated May 2, 1876; application led April 6, 1876.
' dra-win g.
My invention consists in insertingand stitching a cord at each outer edge of the b,osom,in the usual lap or fold used in stitching down ordinary bosoms, whereby l get a correct guide for the ordinary line of stitching on the edge, either on a straight-cut or curved bosom, making regular or true seams or lines of stitching, as hereinafter fully described.
rIhe accompanying drawing represents a face View of a shirt-boso1n having my improvement. Y
A is the bosom of the shirt. B is a cord, which is inserted in the fold or lap of the edge, and stitched down with the lap on the body of the shirt. Gis an ordinary inner line of stitching, which is made perfectly regular by using the cord as a guide. In the ordinary mode of stitching without such guide the seam would be irregular, as shown.
A cord, B', may be inserted at the outer side of the inner line of stitching, the same as shownat the outer edge, to form a guide for the same, forming a complete and true double line, over which the bosom is set into the body of a shirt, makinga clean-cut finish over the lines of stitching never before shown in setting in a bosom to the body of a shirt.
It will be understood that this mode or novelty of `finish prevents the outer edges being cut by the flattening process of ironing, thereby preventing the usual cutting and wearing out of the outer edges.
I am aware that the insertion of cords in shirtbosoms before they are connected with the shirts is not new. This I do not claim; but
What I do claim as my invention is- A shirt having acord or cords inserted and stitched down at the inner and outer lines of stitching, along the outer edges of the bosom, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
JAMES HAYDEN.
