UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMIL M. ESPENHAIN, ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
COLLAR AND CUFF.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 236,879, dated January 25, 1881.
Application filed November 23, 1860. (No model.)
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL M. ESPENHAIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shirt Collars and Cuffs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
This invention consists in the provision, in an ordinary shirt collar or cuff, of a strengthening-gusset at the corner, where the band joins the body of the collar, the purpose being to impart strength to the collar at said point, so as to resist the strains to which it is ordinarily exposed. Heretofore this has been the weakest point in the collar or end, and the one most likely to first tear, owing to the fact that it is exposed to the most strain and wear, both in use and in washing and making up. By my improvement these objectionable features are entirely overcome.
The drawing is a perspective view of a 1stand-up collar having my improvement app ied.
In the drawing my invention is applied to an ordinary stand-up collar; yet it is evident that it may be used on any other form and style of collar or cuff without departing from the spirit of my invention.
In the drawing, A represents the collar, having, as usual, an upper portion or body, B, and a band portion, 0, by which it is attached to the shirt-band.
The band 0 may be of any suitable form or construction, either forming a part of the collar or made separate and stitched thereto.
At the point a, where the front edges of the body B join the band portion 0, my strengthening-gusset D is applied. In my preferred construction this gusset-piece is triangular in shape, and placed between the layers of material that compose the collar, and stitched in place during the process of manufacture by the same stitching that unites said layers of material together to form the collar.
The gusset-piece may be made of one or more thicknesses of material, and in forming it fragments left in cutting the collars may be used, so that no additional expense will be incurred in applying my improvement to collars during the process of manufacture.
I claim as new- A gusset-piece, D, inserted in a shirt collar or cult at the points a, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
EMIL M. ESPENHAIN.
