The present invention relates'to hooks and more particularlyto hooks adapted for use in hoisting apparatus or the like.
An object of this invention is to provide a safety hook which may be'used yin combi-V a predetermined amount ofplayorl rotatal bility upon the hook so that' When the article held thereby swings laterally.' ofthe Y hoisting apparatus the locking member will not readily be released. y
A further objectV` of this invention is to provide a hook ofthe character described ,U which is readily and cheaply manufactured and whichV will be of suliicientstrength to f n Y l is l preferably flush with ythe'.:outer `faee "of thehook loandthe annular.. .member15"is4 safely hold the desired load to be lifted.
The above and variousrother objects and; advantages of this invention will in part be,
I described in and in part be yunderstood from 'e the following detailed. description 'of theV v present preferred embodiment, thesame beingillustrated in the accompanying 'drawmg, wherein:
Figure 1 is a detail side elevationy of a" device constructed Aaccording-'to .the 'pre 11,] of Figure l; and
ferred embodiment of this invention; Y Figure 2`is a longitudinal section 'partly in detail taken substantially on 'the line 2-2 Figure 3 is a detail top plan view of the link member. i f A Referring tothe drawing' wherein like numerals of reference designate correspond ing parts throughout the several vievvsthe numeral 10 designates generally a hool; member Which is'provided With a bifurcated upper end portion 11,
The upper end portion 11 is provide-d with an aperture 12 therethrough for rockably revprovided withl a substantially annular poi-j-e tion 15 which `looselyengages Within the bif f furcated member 11. The annular memberf or thelilre infwhich casethesecuring memanA arc softhatV the lug. or,y stud- 21 Will'be ceiving a ringmember 13. A yloclringigaiv Y or paWl-member lllvis adapted tobe loosely ymounted in the bifurcated upper end portion 11v of the hookv member-$10.r`
Themovable jaw member 14h-is preferably 15 is provided with an axial opening` 16 for receiving the ring memberml whichl .is 55 adapted to be loosely mountedtherein.
' v The lockingmember'lis preferablyprovided with atapering por: angularly-einclined lower end portion 17; Which is adaptedr to beara'g-ainst the peintedfornpvvardly yeX-.o` tendingv portion 18 .of the hook 10s@ that when thev locking. member 4llis svvungin- Wardly the angularportion' 11.7 ofthe locking member will securely lock thexdesired elementen' the1hook. r: i l* k i 'The outer face of-'tlie locking preferably provided v vith: anV outstanding flange or segmental portion v 19.wl'iich .is adaptedto loosely engage' about thebifurcated .rounded `portion 20 of th'eupperl `end 1l f vThe locking member 111 is provided Withip anupstandiiig lug .211 lA.linkuneinber 22 is alsobe' secured tothe Iring-13 lby Welding'V Y `8() ber 23 maybe eliminated. y i .Y Ifv desired, the rear half ofthe link 22 may be constructed .substantially straight and the'forwa'rdhalf thereofvbe'formed on loosely ypositioned therebetvveeng, The ring 13 isy preferably provided'- With al pair of collarsv 24. which. are positioneduponv *the f opposite` sidesA of the .bifurcated' upper end portion v11 and are adapted to 'preventjthe 9u ring 13 from lateral movement on the hook the link member 22 the ring 13 is given a In the use of this device the hook member 10 may engage the desired hoisting cable or the like, the pawl or locking jaw member 14 Vbeing swung outwardly so as to permit the cable to be inserted in thehook.
The ring member 13 may be swung forwardly so that the link 22 will engage the lug 21 and thereby cause the locking mem ber 14 to swing on its pivot and engage` against the hook portion 18. It is obvious that the ring member 13 not only serves the member carried by said hook member, a'lug upstanding from said movable locking `member, a ring rockably mounted onsaid hook, a plurality of collars carriedr by said ring and engaging said hook, and a link member mounted on said ring and engagingl said lug therebetween whereby toV swing said movable locking member cooperatively with c the swinging of said ring.
In testimony whereofl hereunto aliix my signature y J. MCSHANE.
purpose of providing an eXtended pivotal member for the movable jaw but also pro.`
vides means byk which the* hook 10 may be hoisted or otherwise secured to conventional hoisting apparatus. The ring 13 during the assembly of the component parts of the hook 7 i will of course be split, but the open portions of the ring when the assembly has been completed will be assembled or otherwise secured together so as to provide a solid ring.
While the material is being hoisted it re- Y quently occurs that the cable will be swung horizontally and through the provision of the details of construction and design ofthe above specifically described embodiment of l the invention without departing'rfrom the spiritV thereof, such changes and Ymodiica- I Y tions being restricted only bythe scopefof` f the followingclaims': Y
What is claimed is` Y 1. A hook of the characterdescribedcomfy Y prising a hook member, a movable jaw member secured to said hook, and a ring rockably carried by said hook, lsaid ringalso providing aV pivotal member` for lsaid movable jaw. I
2.l A hook Aof' the character deseribedcom-l prising abifurcate'd hook member, a rockable jaw member carried by said hook, an upstanding lug mounted on said rockable jawV member, a ringl rockably carried said y hook, and lug engaging means carried' by said ring whereby to cooperatively; move said jaw with the movement of said ring.
