BOX-COVER.
Patented May 2,
' N PETERS. FHOTQ-LITHOGHAPHER. WASHINGTON. D, C.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIOE.
WILLIAM L. HUBBELL, on NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR T0 RAYMOND JENKINS,
OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOX-COVERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l76,863, dated May 2, 1876; application filed February 3, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM L. HUBBELL,
of the city and State of New'Yorlghave invented an Improvement in Covers for Boxes, of which the following is a specification: This invention relates-to a box-cover that is turned aside in a plane parallel, or nearly so, to the top or mouth of the box, and moves upon a pivot-pin that is at right angles to such plane; and the invention consists in combining with such cover a rim, and a spring that presses the cover toward the box.
By this construction the coverhas to be lifted bodily from t-he box sufficiently to clear the rim" from the box, and then swung aside, and
when the lid is tnrnedback over the box the spring closes it down'bodily, causing the rim to enter Within, or to surround the end of the box, thereby preventing the cover being turned aside until lifted bodily against the action of the spring.
1n the drawing, Figure 1 is a section of the lid and the box-shaped end for a tobaccopouch. Fig. 2is a similar section of a matchbox, with the cover turned aside, and Fig. 3 is an endwise View.
The box-a is of any desired shape or size,
- with a bottom, I), Fig, 2, or without a bottom,
as in Fig. l. The lid or cover 0 is made with a-rim, 11, either external or internal, to pass outside or inside the end of the box. The pivot c, upon which the cover turns or is swung aside, is at'right angles to the pew of the cover-at or near one side thereof,-and said pivot enters a socket or tube, i, and vis provided with a spring, o, which is, preferably, helical, and around the pivot e, to act to draw the cover down toward the box, so that when the cover is lifted bodily the rim is cleared from the box, the pivot-pin moved endwise, and the spring strained; the cover can now be turned aside in a plane parallel to the end of the box; and a projection around the pivotpin is shown at l, to rest upon the end of the box, so as to prevent the lid being drawn down by the spring after it has been turned aside; hence the lid or cover can be revolved entirely around; but when in position for the cover to close, the spring moves the pivot-pin eudwise, shutting the lid down bodily with the flange or rim inside or outside the box, and
.thus the lid'is prevented from being turned around until again lifted to clear the rim from the'box.
The projection 1 may be a pin passing into a slot inthe pivot-tube, and resting upon the end of that tube when the lid is turned aside.
I claim as my inventiou A flanged cover, for boxes and similar articles, connected to a box by means of anextended pivotand closing-spring, and capable of being raised vertically and swung laterally, substantially as described.
Signed by me this 29th day of January, A. D. 1876.
WM. L. HUBBELL.
