Description
HERMANN GNOTH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
ASH-PAN FOR STOVES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May s, 1era.
Application led October 22, 1913. Serial No. 796,598.
To all whom 'it m ay concern.'
Be it known that I, HERMANN GNOTH, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Chicago, in thel county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ash-Pans for Stoves, of which the following is-a specifithe stove are confined Within a suitable ccm!i tainer instead o-f being permitted to pass into the room or premises where the stove is placed.
VIn the drawings, Figure l is an elevation of the invention shown in juxtaposition with the stove in connection with which theinvention is being used; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the invention; and Fig. 3 is a View at right angles to Fig 2.
The container l which comprises a suitable vessel, preferably formed of sheet metal or other sheet. material, carries tianges 2 upon its inner walls, upon which flanges the box or tray 3 is adapted to slide. `The container l is provided with a spout 4. which is of such a height. that the tray 3 when resting upon the flanges 2 is in registration with the spout 4. The tray 3 is adapted to move from full line position, Fig. 3, to or toward the dotted line position in the same figure,
and when same is in the dotted line position, it projects ,into the aperture 5 in the stove, which aperture is closed by the ash-pit door 6. a
When the tray 3 is moved from full line position to dotted line position, the tray 3 will be beneath the grates of the stove and the ashes can be shaken directly into the tray 3. After the ashes have been placed in the tray, the same is moved from dotted line position to full line position, and in this Way `the ashes are transferred from the stove to thel interior of the container l without any shoveling or manual handling such as tends to provoke or create a dust.
The tray 3 is made without a top, simply being an open shallow drawerlike tray. The bottom member 6, however, is not formed integrally with the sides of the tra)7 but is in pivotal relation thereto, the bottom 6 being carriedupon a rod or shaft 7, the ends of which project into slots 8 in the side walls 9. Said bottom 6 may be rocked upon its pivot after the tray 3 has been moved `to full line position, and in that way the ashes dumped to the bottom of the receptacle l, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The side wall of the receptacle 1 is provided with Y'a slot (not shown) through which the end of the rod 7 projects, same being provided with aA ring or handle 10 to permit ready turning of the bottom G upon its axis. A lever or handle 11 is adapted, also.A to project throughthis slot,- the object of said lever being to move the tray 3 from one position to the other.
Hinged to the container 1 is a. lid or valve 12 which will drop downwardly when the tray 3 is moved to dotted line position and seal the. mouth of the spout 4. Said member l2,- therefore, will keep all dust and dirt Within the container when the tray 3 is beneath the stove. Then the parts are in the positions shown in Fig. 2, however, the tray itself will close the mouth ofl the spout,
The bottom 14 of the container l is hinged to the main body of the container at 15 and retained in place by` a spring catch 16. This construct-ion permits ready removal of the ashes which accumulate from time to time in the bottom of the container 1.
I claim as my invention:
l. A device of the character described `comprising a container, supporting means i f the bottom of said tra-y from the body to close the mouth of said spout when Suid thereof.
3. In a. device of the character described,
the combination of a container having a.
5 spout projecting outwardly therefrom, a tray adapted to project through said spout, .means for supporting saidtray Within said container, and a valve-like memberadapted Copies of this patent may be obtained f tray is outside of said container.
In testimony whereof I hereunto ahx my l HERMANN GNOTH. Witnesses:
