IMPROVEMENT IN RElN-BUTTONS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,758, dated May 2, 1876; application filed June 29, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, JOSEPH F. RICHARDS and JAooB HERKIMER, both of the city of Chicago, 'in the county of Cook, of the State of lllinois, have invented an Improvement in Rein-Buttons, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forminga part hereof.

Figure 1 of the drawing shows our reinbutton applied'to the rein and in the hand of the driver. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the button without the shield, and a section of the rein, to which it is applied in the manner of a buckle. Fig. 3 is an edge view of Fig.2. Fig. 4 is a sectional View of the button on a line from I. to I in Figs. 5 and 6. Fig. 5 is a plan view thereof, showing the side opposite the shield. Fig. 6 is a plan view thereof, showing the side with the shield.

Our invention relates to arein-button, which consists of a device composed of a serrated eccentric cylinder journaled into a metallic frame covered by a leather shield, for the purpose of securin g to the persons driving or riding horses or other animals a more firm hold upon the rein.

To enable other persons to make and use our invention, we will now proceed to describe it more fully.

In our invention,A represents the eccentric cylinder; B, the metallic frame. and E the leather shield. The frame B, preferably made oblong in shape, consists of a rim, 1), and ata point near the center of the latter a crossbar, b. The cylinder is journaled into the rim at the points 0 c by means of a shaft, 0, passing through the cylinder on a line off the center. The cylinder is arranged in such a manner in relation to the cross-bar that they are parallel to each other, that the surface of the former most distant from the shaft gravitates toward the cross-bar, and that an aperture, f, is formed between the cylinder and the cross-bar, for the purpose of receiving the rein, and within which the latter is held by the serrated surface of the eccentric pressing against the rein, and pressing the latter against the crossbar. The leather shield is fitted and secured to one side 'of the frame, and is provided with an aperture, (1, corresponding in shape with the aperture f, and arranged so as to be exactly opposite the latter, for the purpose of admitting the rein to pass throughtlie shield altogether, as shown in'the several figures of the drawing.

In using our invention the button is placed in the hand in such a position that the side with the shield is toward the hand, and that the apertures f d are exactly between the two middle fingers, so that the rein inserted into the apertures f d passes between said fingers.

We do not claim asour invention the use of a serrated eccentric evlinder, knowing that the same has been variously used in the manner of a clamp; but

What We claim as a new article of manufacture, as our invention, and which we desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The serrated eccentric cylinder A, in combination with the frame B, provided with the parallel bar I), shaft (J, and shield E, substantially as described, for the purpose set forth in the foregoing specification.
