opposite horizontally disposed wheels, simu lating feet or claws. A further object of the present invention is to provide a toy of the character stated in which horizontally disposed rotatable parts symbolic of the feet or claws of a spider, crab,,lobster, or the like are employed which rotate during the towing or propulsion of the toy.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a toy of the character stated which may be readily stamped from thin metal to provide an inexpensive article.
A further object'is to provide an arrange ment, combination, and connection of parts for attaining the results sought bythe foregoing objects.
The invention consists of the novel con-J struction hereinafter described and finally claimed.
vention I have shown in the accompanying drawings one form thereof which is at pres-.
ent preferred by me since the same has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of the instrumentalities as herein shown and described.
The nature, characteristic features and scope of the invention will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, and in which: Y
Fig. 1, is a top or plan view of a toy embo dying the invention. 1
Fig. 2 is a view in rear elevation of Fig. 1.
of eyes. Preferably formed For the purpose of illustrating my in- Referring to the drawings in detail, 1
designates the top or bodyof the toy, which may be oval or elliptical in contour, when viewed from the top, andwhich in cross-' section (seeFig. 2) is arched or'convex and horizontally positioned, said member 1 being preferably made of thin sheet metal, or
a casting, 1 although papier mach orthe like or other material may be employed, which maybe painted a bright color "as green to depict the color of acrustacean, insect, crab, or similar creature.- The back l also has depicted-thereon spots 3 symbolic inte ral with the 5 member 1 i and a projected inwardly therefronri's a pairof oppositelydis'posed claws or members 4' which maybe painted red or any other color contrasting with the color of member- 1. In the present instance the members 4; depict the claws of a crab or lobster and the 'member 1 represents the back of the crab or lobster, sothat in this particular instance the member 1 would be painted green and themembers 4- painted red. Having pivotal relation with the opposite ends ofthe-member 1 is a pair of toothed wheels 6 upon, which the member 1 travels as it is drawn or towed forward by the cord 5, whichis attached to the mem bers l. These toothed wheels are each arranged at an angle; withrespect to the surface over which the toy is to be drawn and the vertical axes of the wheelsare at an inclination to the surface over which the toy is to be drawn, whereby as the toy is drawn forwardonlythe outer arms of the wheels engage the floor surface at the same time, thereby imparting a" rotary movement tosaid wheels. 5 I V The wheels 6 each comprisesa generally flatflor-hub portion, and formed-integral therewith and radiating therefrom is a plurality of arms 7, which terminatein the flattened or deflected pointsfwhichmay be any desired form of connection, as screw, passing through the wheels and top andp'rovided with a' nut. These wheels Gare symbolic of feet oftlie insect, animal, or similar creature and also portions 8 for engaging the floor surface- 9' designates the pivot are of a color contrasting with the color of the member 1 and may be readily stamped from one piece of thin metal.
In drawing the toy forward by means of the cord 5 the outer arms only of the Wheels frictionally engage the floor surface and are revolved, thus giving the effect of a plurality of moving feet and the entire toy provides a very realistic appearing article, simulating an insect, crustacean or the like.
It will be understood that any desired contrasting colors may be employed for the rotatable member G-and the back .1,.or if desired the same color may be employed for said back and rotating members. It will-beunderstood further that'the back or top member 1 can be cast, or, if desired, stamped from sheet metal in a single stamping or pressing operation, and since the rotary members 6 comprising their hubs and radiating arms are substantially identical or alike a single set of dies will sufiice to producethe two rotating elements 6 so that my device can be manufactured in large quantities very cheaply, as it only requires an assembling operation to mount the rotatable members 6 in place and secure them may be rotated around their axes, said axes being inclined to each other and to the surface over which the toy is to be propelled, whereby only the outer of said radial arms contact with the surface over which the toy is to be propelled.
4. A toy of the character stated and simulating an animal, comprising a generally elliptical-shaped convex top member, clawlike portions extended forwardly from said member, a towing cord secured to said clawlike members, a pair of oppositely disposed wheels comprising hubs connected to said top member and provided with radial arms. pivoted beneath said member on an axis at an oblique angle with respectto the surface over which the toy is to be propelled sothat only the outer series of said arms contact with said surface to rotate said wheels around their axes, said wheels and top being of contrasting-colors.
HAROLD s. BARNEsL and to secure the string 5'in position, all of whichcan be done by very cheap labor.
I amaware that the invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential attributes thereof, and I therefore desire the present embodiment to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, reference being had to the appended claims rather than to the foregoing description to indicate the scope of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: p
' 1. As a new article of manufacture, a toy depicting a crab, crustacean or like creature, the feet ofwhichcomprise opposed hubs provided, with radial arms constituting wheels the axes of which wheels are inclined with respect to one another and to the surface .over which the toy is-to be drawn.
2. A toy of the character stated and simulating an animal, comprising a convex top, a pair of hubs pivoted beneathsaid top at an angle with respect to the surface over which the toy is to be propelled and provided .with radial arms constituting wheels, the outer series only of which arms contact with said surface so that saidwheels may be rotated around their axes.
3. A toy of the character stated and sim ulating an animal, comprising a generally elliptical-shaped convex top member, a pair of hubs having radial arms constituting Wheels pivoted beneath said-member at an angle with respect to the surface over which the toy is tobe propelled so that said wheels I
